Now!

…at the gorgeous and…

…at the gorgeous and gracious Shanghai Red’s in a big super fantastic windows-on-three-sides view of the marina private room. FAabulous!

Doing the set-ups. …

Doing the set-ups. We brought place cards and name tags, the mixer game of ‘what am I?’, and a Thanksgiving word association game.

Betsy and Lucas put…

Betsy and Lucas put together this charming showcase and the crowd went wild.

Betsy, Arnav, Xander, Rome, Anya, Lucas.

The traditional Speaking of…

The traditional Speaking of the Presidents and their Thanksgiving Day proclamations. L&H have been doing this little playlet for yeears now.

Then between extended passes at the buffet we had:

Readings and a song from the Sanos family.
Audience participation Thanksgiving Day jokes.
Music from the Danderand family.
Introductions from the crowd.

And a Grand time was had by all.

Windy’s hats got quite…

Windy’s hats got quite a work-out. EVeryone wanted their picture made in the Pilgrim hats.

I wonder now…I’m wondering if L&H have now so raised the bar that expectations will need to be met (say I in the passive voice having contributed a whole lot of not much)…I wonder.

Xander, Hartley, Lona, Anya

Yikes! I didn’t put my mind to getting the whole room. Too bad! I’m going to put a list of the attendees here, for memory’s sake: Anton, Shiela, Paulaine Sano; Liz Hale; Michael Cardarelli, Britney Furgeson; Jim, Joy Mainwaring; Vivian Weng; Jim Carter, Sandy Luo; Geraldine Mole; Hartley, Lona Brown; Jerry, Jan, Jenny, Julia, John, Kim, Dash, Euin Dandurand; Penny Kanouse; Cynthia Kanouse, Mark Smith; Darryl, Angela, Rome Kanouse; Marsha Wilhelm; Lucas, Betsy, Alexander, Anna-Lisa King; Bala, Bhanu, Vandana Sardesai; Sunjay, Archana, Arnav Bindra.

November 21

Nancy and I took Sandy to the Chinese massage place for her birthday and we all looved it! Here’s the scene a few steps from their front door.

I went with Susie…

November 20

I went with Susie to The Huntington today. It was as good a day for the Huntington as ever there was. Cool, bright, clear, even light and soft shadows. Hurray!

The Chinese Garden was…

The Chinese Garden was built by craftsmen brought from Suzhou, China who fabricated much of the buildings back home and then finished them off while in residence here. They brought all their tools and extra materials for the inevitable new requirement.

It is quite a feat of hand made construction and the director’s feeling is that such a thing will never be built again.

This is the back…

This is the back patio of the place where Sharon and I usually enjoy our mid-walk repast. It’s an hour out, an hour break, and an hour back. Good and good for you!

Then dinner with the…

Then dinner with the boys. The turkey not even in the oven and yet here we are all Christmas Tree-ed and Decking The Halls.

All of a sudden,…

November 18

All of a sudden, out of the blue, some strange combination of sun, machinery, and reflections caused this shadow to appear on Rome’s ceiling. ‘Rome Rome quick let’s take a picture!’ and so we did.

Her enthusiasm for taking this picture was quite delightful. We have been playing with shadows for some time now and this was yet another highlight.

Boban came out to…

Boban came out to Santa Monica so we could enjoy his birthday lunch together. We took a stroll over to the skating rink(!) they do up at 5th and Arizona every year. It was, like, 80 degrees or something out there.

I wanted to grab…

I wanted to grab this shot real quick like a bunny before Boban changed his mind about a picture. Quick! Grab a click! And this is it. Cute, despite the full on lens flare right exactly in the center of his handsome sweet face, and the tree growing out of the top of his head. Cute despite all that…

November 16…

November 16

Brigitte just got back from Dubai, now in day two of a 12 hour time change. But she hung in for a few hours to tell us about her adventures, there and in Abu Dhabi, and show us her wonderful pictures on Ingalill’s honkin’ big tv.

Brigitte also provided this feast of double cream cheeses, and wine, and fruit and bread and crackers and many sweet treats from the UAE. Perfect!

I didn’t want to…

I didn’t want to miss a shot of that pink of the Beverly Hills Hotel where Carol and Bill are staying. There was a black-tie wedding going on in there, probably a few thousand guests. It was very elegante, the cost of which no doubt would have bought me a very nice house.

I met Ken and…

I met Ken and his cousins for a nice dinner and re-aquainting conversation. Here’s from my last visit with them, Carol and Bill in 2005.

And here’s the whole group of Ken’s cousins from 2005. Notice my outfit. I Laughed Out Loud. Not at all surprising though, since this IS what I wear for Dress Up.

We started out at…

November 12

We started out at the same-time-same-place but turned left at Rose for a different snack – lunch at the Rose Cafe and then instead of walking back on the bike path we walked back on Main. A walkin’ change of pace!

This was fun! …

November 13

This was fun! I went with Nancy to her ikebana class at Beverly Hills High School. All the students were very friendly and having a great time.

You can see the teacher Mrs Shohara behind Nancy’s right shoulder.

The teacher goes to…

The teacher goes to each student’s finished project with her snippers in hand. A little nudge here, and a snip there and here too, and a relocation or two and voila, it’s better everyone agrees.

That is the teaching method: she passes out the materials, says a few words and makes gestures with her hands, and then leaves the students to give it a try. Then she pretty much changes everyone’s work and in so doing you are to learn.

I got to say a few farewell words in Japanese and she responded immediately and instinctively, not with that puzzled ‘I have no Idea what you’re talking about’ look you get sometime, which was tons of fun for me.

A night shot in…

November 11

A night shot in the closet mirror. And mighty dang cute I’d say…the hats were prizes from the Yes We Can! election party.

Then we went to…

Then we went to an amazing pet shop full of hand raised birds all sitting free on these perches and all entirely delighted to ‘step up!’.

Sunday morning and time…

November 9

Sunday morning and time for a Cynthia day down south. We had breakfast at our now regular breakfast palace and then hit the road.

First stop, the Orange County Great Park hoping we could use our ‘wind check’ flight coupon from last year on the balloon ride. But no, too much wind Again! The park wasn’t much changed except here we have a military timeline painted on what was an El Toro runway.

And then… the Casa…

And then… the Casa Romantica. From their website: “Casa Romantica Cultural Center and Gardens, the historic Spanish Colonial Revival estate of San Clemente founder Ole Hanson, embodies the Romance and Reality of the Southern California experience. Its stunning setting is a place for people of all ages to explore and understand Southern California history, architecture, ecology and culture.”

November 8

It was Marsha’s mom’s funeral today down in San Diego. She leaves four daughters and a son, a multitude of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a church full of friends.

November 6

Another glorious beach-day with Sharon. It’s been 75 degrees and sparkling clear which is why the horizon line is so sharp. This is a super-tele-photo from up on the bluffs.

Nice, a walk with…

November 5

Nice, a walk with Sandy on the jetty with a convenient pit stop available along the way. It was a Gorgeous outing and a Spectacular November day at the beach.

In the evening I went with my little sister to Ikea where she guided me along in the purchase of several items with the intention to redouble my efforts to put away all my cr*p…every day…(what’s the big DEAL?!). I actually have plenty of room, plenty of desire, just not so much achievement.

Before the party, here’s…

Before the party, here’s Rome filling out the quiz. It was a game of silly questions having to do with the events of the evening. The winners got FAbulous prizes…

Yes We Can!! …

November 4

Yes We Can!! A couple of the guests at Darryl and Angela’s Election Night Party, and a Grand time was had by all!

Hilda and I are…

November 2

Hilda and I are sitting at the counter eating hors d’ouervres and sipping wine while Merlyn makes us a faabulous dinner. Now that’s mighty cool.

Louise, my next door…

November 1

Louise, my next door neighbor in Northridge, invites the neighbors over for her annual Halloween get-together. So once a year I get to hear all the news of my old street.

The end of October…

October 31

The end of October got so taken up with Halloween I’m putting this here – a Getty Villa outing with Sharon and her niece Amber and Amber’s husband Scott. What a couple of cuties.

When I clicked the…

When I clicked the shutter I thought this picture was straight. This happens All the time and I usually just fix it with photoshop. I learned a few days ago that I’ve got a cataract growing on my right eye and a nasty astigmatism. During the test I reached out to the test card in order to straighten it out…but it Was straight!

The optomistrist said it could be one year or ten years before it was bad enough for surgery. Now I have to get new glasses and maybe my eye will start to see straight!

BTW-This is the Jim Dine exhibit with no photos allowed in the room itself. It was so surprising and entertaining to walk into with no expectations. If you have a chance to get up here it’s well worth it just for 5 minutes of standing in there.

Same time same place…

October 28

Same time same place always good fun.

The Halloween season has begun. Photos from Rome’s school party and all the additional events…photos in the Halloween! chapter.

Brigitte gave me these…

October 27

Brigitte gave me these sproutlings for my garden. I put them here to get a few more roots and they look so dog gone cute I’m wanting to keep them right where they are!

A few blocks from…

A few blocks from my house. Usually I take a picture of the street just before this one with the long march of 5 story tall palm trees.

That’s Big Blue down there crossing Santa Monica Blvd., part of the excellent public transportation system in Santa Monica that I appreciate so much.

Twenty bucks a unit…

Twenty bucks a unit for all comers to learn Music. What a gift…literaly, from me, since I am going to vote for a Santa Monica College bond measure that will increase my taxes.

I had a wonderful chat with the guitar teacher who filled me in on the story. The building (at 10th and Arizona) was completely refurbished for this purpose, moving the entire music program from the Pico campus, but, get this, they ran out of money and didn’t install a/c(!) and hence the fan.

This Santa Monica College building is connected to…

I was walking down…

I was walking down to the beach and heard strange and intersting sounds coming from those open windows. Walking to the front door…whoo, it’s the Santa Monica College music school recently opened and full of students.

…the new SMC Broad…

…the new SMC Broad Stage theater built with a ten million dollar grant from the very same Broads who took back their gift to LACMA which I was not so happy about, but then the guitar teacher reminded me that without the Broads ‘they’ might not have got Disney Hall finished, but I digress.

The theater just opened and has been very well reviewed as a venue for all the performing arts.

David Mamet, when asked…

David Mamet, when asked to comment on The Broad Stage remarked as follows:

“The only thing more important than a forum where the community can go to hear the truth is a forum where the community can go to hear the truth with adequate parking.”

And then dinner at…

And then dinner at Ken and Susie’s (thank you!) where Les and Elizabeth have been staying for a few days. Les was a guest speaker at CSUN today and Elizabeth is speaking in Long Beach tomorrow.

Here we are getting to hear Elizabeth’s talk which was a real treat. We got the benefit of the unabridged version. She’s going to have to drop about 30 minutes for the class.

I am 100% hot…

I am 100% hot for this beach. It’s a surfer’s beach and you have to walk very near the pier before it is open for swimmers but hey, we’re not swimming anyway.

Surfin’ USA!…

Surfin’ USA!

And the parking lot is 10 yards from our location, and there’s a bathroom 20 yards away, and with chairs and blankets, and an umbrella were it not so windy, we’re talking beach perfection.

Rome! D&A went…

October 25

Rome! D&A went out for date night and we got to play! Here we are doing a little hula since Rome got this sweet dress from a neighbor who was visiting Hawaii.

Then we created The Backward Dance. The final section is where Rome gyrates herself moving backwards laughing her head off while Granny shephards the movements hoping sincerely that Rome does not topple over (backwards!).

This cat was a…

This cat was a highlight of our neighborhood stroll. We learned his name…but I’ve forgotten already, like, a few hours later. Maybe Rome will remember.

I went to Santa…

October 24

I went to Santa Barbara today with Nancy to await the arrival of her mom Sylvia’s new refrigerator, washing machine, and water heater, so we could be there for the switch-a-roos. We moved the food, knocked off a shelf that was in the way, and got all the rebates together. Then we went out and ate a lot of food.

Sylvia is 93 years old. She lives on her own in a big house and is sharp as the proverbial tack. Nancy likes to tell how Sylvia can still beat her at Scrabble. You go girl!

This morning at 5:30…

October 23

This morning at 5:30 it was the smell of a wild fire that woke me up. Oh no! It had to be fairly close or very big. It turned out to be fairly close, in the Sepulveda Pass, but not so big. Can you Imagine rush hour traffic? I can!

Thanks Brigitte for the wonderful evening tonight. Delicious food and interesting conversation – perfect!

I surely have done…

October 22

I surely have done a lot of nothin’ these last few days but that’s always what happens when I get home from a trip apparently even without any time change.

Tonight my little sister’s boyfriend took us out for dinner. Windy packed up half her food (just like you’re Supposed to!) and I ate Every Single Bite.

(omg, my old lady slumping round shoulders Must Be Tamed. Windy’s leaning forward but not slumped. How does that work!? Maybe it’s a back thing, about keeping your back straight? I’ve been struggling to control my posture forEVER. What makes me think I’ll ever improve? Nothing makes me think that, I don’t think that, but I soldier on!)

(cutie-pie waiter-man)

October 21

My ex-boss took me to a welcome home lunch at the always welcome Drago just up the street from my house. I was worrying about them since I took these photos at 12:30…but then they filled up nicely and all is well.

Some interesting facts about…

Some interesting facts about the University of Minnesota:

1) The student body is the 4th largest in the US at more than 50,000.
2) They won the College Bowl National Championship in 2004, 2005, and 2007.
3) Chartered in 1851, the buildings are heroic in design and scale.
4) They are freaks for sports and their mascot is The Golden Gopher. The Go Go Gophers (really).

It’s Trip Preparation time…except…LACMA with ND (photo forthcoming) and a Bon Voyage visit with Roger and Sandy.

This is an ikebana from Nancy Artz, and this is a line from her email today “I am feeling serene. It is a wonderful feeling. I am not sure where it came from. It is a bird though and I am coaxing it to stay awhile.” It’s like haiku!

Hurray, a day with…

September 28

Hurray, a day with my own sweet Cynthia! We met in Long Beach at the Museum of Latin American Art and we were both very pleased. It was good in there – good work, nicely shown, and a wide ranging and interesting selection.

This was a very…

This was a very neat collage with mostly National Geo cutouts and one of those fisheye mirrors so you could see yourself in all the venues.

…they have giant mutant…

…they have giant mutant koi in that pond due to the relentless feeding by all visitors.

In this picture you can see the ducks that float around hoping for some leftovers. Those koi are aggressive giants who will fight to eat out of your hand and are about to grow legs they are so often out of the water.

Then we drove over…

Then we drove over to the Long Beach 2nd Street gentrification project where we ate at a tricked out bbq place (the vege-burger being the best item) and had good fun.

This is their signature image. The flying pig (of Course we had to eat here) and on one side he says ‘Eat More Beef’ and on the other he says ‘Eat More Chicken’. Oink!

After lunch we hung…

After lunch we hung around the Japanese Garden at Cal State Long Beach. It’s very small, just basically one path through a few settings but…

We sat on a…

We sat on a bench for a good long time chatting away and messing around with our cameras, trying to get this teeny-tiny flower in the middle of the lake to come out sharp. We enjoy our geeky selves.

Thank you for coming out my own sweet Cynth!

Then I had dinner…

Then I had dinner with Ken and we got snazzed-up for a yee-haw dance outing at the Cowboy Palace in Chatsworth. ok, It’s Ken’s hat and Ken’s scarf, and Ken had to tie the scarf…but Yee-Haw!

We went because Linda…

We went because Linda was teaching the class. We got there early and here is Linda showing Ken what she is planning for the program so he can be her demonstration partner. It was funfunfun (it was dancing)!

Don (an old friend…

Don (an old friend of Ken and Linda who I’ve known over the years) showed up for the festivity too.

Once the live band kicked in though, we had to leave because it was shoulder to shoulder packed in there, and Loud. But if you ever want to get a taste for Country you’ll have an excellent opportunity at The Cowboy Palace.

It was densely foggy…

September 27

It was densely foggy this morning. Walking with Sharon, we couldn’t see the end of the pier from the boardwalk but, although Saturday crowded, it was fun for a change of pace, warm enough, yet brisk. We made The Long Walk in record time.

It’s from Travis! …

September 25

It’s from Travis! He says ‘Hurricane Ike Huffed and Puffed’. But he didn’t get all the trees and he sure didn’t get their house. Good luck on all the work!

Then I did some…

Then I did some Rome time followed by dinner with the guys.

We seem to have taken to the El Torrito Grill like a home away from home.

Wednesday I went with…

Wednesday I went with Brigitte to the Fashion Institute downtown where we saw a very entertaining exhibit of clothes from television. It was oddly much more entertaining than I would have expected when, for the most part, I had not heard of the shows.

We followed the Fashion Institue with a wonderful lunch in a very hip downtown Italian cafe, and then we had a visit to the Hammer Museum.

Then Brigitte came over and worked for two hours cutting out dead stuff from my yard. It would take 2 hours times 200 days for my yard to look 1/200th as gorgeous as hers!

Remember a few days…

Remember a few days ago when Richard was down for his dad’s 90th birthday? Here’s a shot from outside the restaurant.

The Children’s Nature Institute…

The Children’s Nature Institute sponsored this event for their volunteers and since Bonnie is on the board of directors, she got to go too…and I got to tag along.

This guy (James P Folsom) led our tour and he was SO charming. Everyone was in his thrall. He’s the actual Director of the Huntington and he knows Everything.

Rome, Sidne, and Nora!…

Rome, Sidne, and Nora!

Three of the playgroup girls had their kids party together meaning the guests included, with playgroup, siblings, and birthday-girl cousins, we’re talking 25 kids not counting the infants. It seemed there were a couple hundred adults as well.

It was a Tea Party at Nora’s house, with kid sized tables and chairs and table clothes and flower centerpieces, and dress-up(!), and the kids decorated their own tea cups, and there was a big jungle gym and a Bounce House and plenty of yummy food. It was fabulous chaos in every direction and Too Much Fun.
