Before the Monday feast-o-rama I went to Ann’s for a little yoga practice and fig picking party. Ann’s figs make everyone who has every had the privilege to try them weak with pleasure.
I got these pictures off Cynthia’s and Mike’s facebook and put them together because they are so CUTE!

It’s my birthday AND it’s Father’s Day which happens pretty regularly, and I got to celebrate with the father of my grandchildren and his fabulous family. Oh lucky me.
June 18
My future brother-in-law Jeff and my little sister Windy the soon-to-be newlyweds looking over their chapel site in Pacific Palasades. Ahh, wedded bliss!
Having acquired the last of my First Aid Kit for Africa, from the left:
Azithromycin full course antibiotic; Mefloquine malaria prophylactic; Ciprofloxacin for some serious nasties; Sunblock spf-30; Petroleum Jelly (your first aid kit in a jar…); Lorazepam sleeping potion, the most important of all; Hydrocodone for extreme pain; 100% DEET (oh yeah); WHO Vaccination Card to verify Hep A and B, TDAP, Yellow Fever, Typhoid Fever; Aleve and Excedrin for your basic aches and pains; Fanciest bandages available from my sister the nurse; Imodium if you’re feeling ‘poorly’ and must be without a toilet stop; Loratadine-Suphedrine-Benadryl for snot; Sore throat lozanges; Orajel and hope you don’t have to use it; Neosporin topical antibiotic; Hydrocortisone cream and Fluocinonide ointment to soothe the itches.
That should do it. Ooops, I meant to get iodine drops for water purification and I didn’t lay out the alcohol wipes I’m going to bring.
I took a quick trip to Santa Barbara to have a visit with my SB pals Nancy and Michi. .here I am on a walk with Nancy around Hope Ranch, her home for the last year and a half and her home for at least the next year and a half and where I enjoyed spending the night.
June 17
I went to the Federal Building a few days ago ready to stand in line to get more pages for my passport. If you don’t have enough empty pages for stamping you can get turned away at the border!
The guy at the ‘get in line here’ podium convinced me I might as well get a new passport instead of more pages which means, oh no, I need a new passport photo. Sharon took these in front of her patio wall.
June 16
Today I got myself cleared by the dentist and by the doctor – ready set GO to Africa. (This bougainvillea explosion is on my block.)
June 13-14
Maxine made us Princesses on the birthday celebration FesTIVO for me and Ann. She cooked, decorated, gifted, and generally made us all welcome and delighted. You go Max!
And then I got to share my Princess bounty with the grand-girls (Lilly in these photos…) who were born to Princess-hood.
June 11-12
Out with the old, In with the new! That I’ve worn the old ones every four days out of five for three years shows they were dang good shirts. Let’s see how the new ones hold up.
Michi and I both have our birthdays in June so Nancy treated us to a Scrumptious dinner. YUM!
Nancy and I are both attempting to get a photo-face even 1/10th as good as Michi’s photo-face. Point a camera at Michi and boom she looks perfect.
And then back at Michi’s place we enjoyed the birthday cake that she herself baked. YUM AGAIN.
June 10
Brigitte and I did 8 turns on the Pepperdine track today. I made Brigitte stay on the outside lane the whole time because she is young and fit.
That’s the front of the chapel and the back looks the same, that glows with stained glass from the inside.
Knut is retired, the house is on the market, and soon they’ll be back in Europe for the next phase of their sweet and lovely life. You know what I say to myself – be happy for them, and hey, it’s another place to visit!
June 9
Guess who’s trying to eat less for a few weeks so she won’t be so hungry all the time for two months in Africa but is really hungry now. That would be me.

Hi Muriel! We met for lunch at Border Grill and had a few hours here and wandering around the town. Muriel and Santa Monica – how delightful.
Then later in the afternoon Nancy came by the house. This is her fancy-girl daily-wear necklace. Nice.
June 6
Susie and Ken are taking care of David’s foster dog Magic for a couple weeks while David is on vacation.
Will S&K adopt the sweet and seemingly civilized Magic? He was certainly well behaved on our walk. Will they or won’t they? pluses and minuses. It’s a 10-15 year decision so you want to get it right!
June 4
Our Mother’s Day trip to the Nail Salon. So perky and swell.
Rome, Angela, Liz, Me
June 5
I went for a lively beach walk with Gina this morning. Gina wants this hedge for her house, hence the photo to take to the nursery. (From ND-it’s a natal plum.)
I must have known at one point but forgot – in 1970 Gina spent three months in Asia with Eldridge Cleaver and company on officially escorted tours by the governments of North Korea, North Vietnam, and China. There’s a story!
June 3
Charis is in LA (from Honolulu) to earn some money doing work for her grandparents Lona and Hartley. She took one of her days to help me weed the grass and help out with a few more chores too.
Charis, you are an Excellent worker. And we had fun.
Then I went up to Merlyn and Hilda’s for dinner which is always a delight. Here they are on slow-sync-flash on their back patio overlooking the San Fernando Valley.
We went out for a stroll on the bluffs with Sandy’s friend Trish who lives in their building and Trish’s cutie-pie dog.
Brunch my last morning and instead of going out as we might have we decided to start Roger’s retirement ‘as we mean to go on’ and had fabulous food at home.
The community garden at the Park Merced Towers where Roger and Sandy live.
These were built at the same time from the same plans as the Park La Brea Towers in LA and both are in amazingly good shape for a 60 year old complex – really nice apartments that are also relatively inexpensive: big rooms, high ceilings, well insulated, etc.
June 1-2
Roger’s Retirement! It worked out that I was there to mark this eventful day.
Play time!
From their website: “Teach yourself from our educational exhibits, climb the haystack, play in the sandbox, visit the Chicken House, see all the farm animals (donkeys, sheep, goats, chickens, ducks, birds, rabbits, cows, pigs, and horses as well as emus and alpacas) and enjoy the beautiful open space.”
There was a giant tractor made into a slide, a play train and trucks, tunnels and other climbing-running-jumping opportunities. All the kids had a blast-o-rama and the adults were kickin’ it too.
There were at least six of these wagons each packed with little kids and some adults. The ‘farm tour’ took about 45 minutes.
We went on a little ride and then got dropped off in the fields with a Farmer John who guided the kids through the rows. They picked 1) two red beets 2) two golden beets 3) two fennel bulbs 4) five carrots 5) a head of lettuce which they carried home in the bags they had decorated in the classroom.
The wagons did the round trip one load of kids after another. There were maybe 20 groups total. It was quite fantastic how they managed allll those kids.
May 25
Underwood Family Farms, Field Trip!
It was also Super Hero Day at school and Rome was happy to be Super Girl all day long.
How many can we get to hold still at once? And look this way? And smile? Got’ta love ’em.
The girls off to enjoy the animals and all the play yard fun. It’s really a very cool place.
May 24
It was Twin Day at school where the kids dressed up in matching outfits…Rome and her best pals.
Rome lost a front tooth last week and one this week too – it’s the classic look!
The girl in the yellow is Rome’s Big Buddy from the third grade. The woman in pink is the science teacher Mrs Lowenstein, well loved by all.
We went back to the school this evening for Open House. Rome made a special card for her teacher. Mrs Ozeki was so pleased.

Riki and Mike hosted a warm and heartfelt memorial for Riki’s mom, my half-sister, Phyllis. Thank you for doing this dear ones and for inviting us to join you.
Amy, Nicholas, Mike, Erika, Bradley and Ms Reilly the dog.
This is Phyllis’s son James holding the picture I grew up with – all Phyllis and Donn’s kids (yes he quite insistently spelled it with two ‘n’s).
Oldest is Tim, who passed away many years ago. He was exactly my age and if the stories are half true we got up to some trouble together over the years. It was all his fault of course.
Next comes Jenny who was born with many challenges both physical and mental. She has not been able to live on her own but she is still with us and quite the character.
After Jenny Phyllis took a baby-break and then in quick order came the next two – Riki and James.
Justin, Carolynne, James, Jake
1) Amy, Nicholas, Mary and John (Mike’s parents), Bradley.
2) Gary and Loretta (Carolynne’s parents).
3) DAR Ladies – Lillian Baldwin, Bev Weager and her sister Rhonda.
4) Lona, Timi (Jenny’s caregiver) and Jenny.
1) me, Lona, Hartley, Windy.
2) Riki’s two boys Nicholas and Bradley with Jenny.
3) Good friends Stephanie, Mike, and Julie.
May 22 late at night
I let United Airlines buy me off for a cool four hundred bucks and waiting the night in a hotel. Nice. .and the rest of my party decided to do it too! So I haven’t got to even loading up the pictures from the memorial yet, and my schedule is pretty full – but soon, soon!
May 20
This is a picture from 2004, the last time I saw my half-sister Phyllis, my father’s daughter from his first marriage before he married my mother. She’s the second from the right. We’ve got: Riki (Phyllis’s daughter), Mom, Me, Phyllis, Windy.
Even in 2004 Phyllis had already been staying a few years in a home for dementia patients. At this visit Phyllis did not recognize me at all but she was clever in pretending.
She passed away this month and I along with Windy, Lona, and Hartley have traveled to San Ramon where tomorrow we will attend a memorial for Phyllis at Riki’s house.
I had dinner with Bill tonight, husband of Cheryl, father of Mindy and Kim. This is a picture from Kim’s fabulous wedding in Florida (that I attended with Ken) and Mindy is the Peace Corps Volunteer who is going to meet me in Zambia.
May 19
Our Nancy, Poll Worker, you Go. (I didn’t make this picture but I wish I had. Today Nancy had me over for a lovely morning and I forgot, again, to take a shot.)
May 18
Liz came by and together we went to Pepperdine for a walk on the excellent track, and to have a look around.
The Stone Livingroom outside the closed museum.
We ate in the cafeteria which is always fun and then went to enjoy the chapel. The is one of the many fabulous views from up there.
Late in the night, like I was a teenager or something, I went to Carl and Lynn’s where we met Dan and Shelly, and then we all went to hunt grunions. Like I was a teenager or something.
Flashlights, in search of grunion.
Were there grunion? We didn’t see any even though the internet said they should be there. Could the internet be wrong? Do grunion even exist?
There’s a Frank Zappa song called ‘Grunion Run’. I could find a purported instrumental but no lyrics. I would so enjoy hearing what Frank Zappa had to say about grunion.
May 17
Lilly had her friends over today, the twins Lila and Anya. Identical twins, and sisters to Rome’s friend Nora, children of Katie and Jed.
May 16
What I’m thinking at this point for my Africa trip, July 3-August 30:
1) Johannesburg, drive to 2) and 3) Durban and the National Parks and UNESCO World Heritage sites of KwaZulu-Natal, drive to 4) Swaziland and Kruger National Park, drive back to Johannesburg and then fly to…
5) Maun where I’ll pick up a camping safari that visits four of the prime National Parks in Botswana ending at Victoria Falls where Peace Corps Volunteer Mindy will meet me. Together we will travel through 6) Zambia, then I’ll visit 7) Malawi.
SOO exciting! Now I should figure out how to say ‘Hello!’ and my 9 other required espressions in the 10s of languages spoken here.
May 15
I surely have been doing a lot of not too much these days.
No pictures of some socializing, some time on the street, and enjoying home: unpacked and laundry all done, a lot of reading, re-doing all my India pictures, watching Netflix and SeriesTV.
It was National Tourist Day and the equivalent of the Chamber of Commerce was putting on a show up at the fort. We felt lucky to have happened upon this celebration but it brought in sharp, and in a way uncomfortable, focus how the virtual disappearance of Western tourists was impacting the economy in the areas so dependent on tourism.
May 13
Wow, Thanks Muriel. .So FUN – A right-out-of-the-book Dinner Party, the book being Nobu Matsuhisa’s. Gorgeous, delicious, ahhhh.
We are now sending Mazel Tovs to Santa Barbara Nancy in honor of the arrival of her third grandchild. Hurray!

Spring in the ‘hood. Glad I got back in time to see my dinos in their boy-girl foliage.
We all walked to Rome’s school to pick her up, and here she is with a friend in the side yard that has a full wall mural that looks like…
…this.
Then Rome and I walked to the local public library to return books, choose some new ones, read a few, it was so much Fun.
In the late afternoon we sisters took ourselves out for a treat in honor of our mother who, in her later years, would do almost anything if you promised her that when it was over she’d get a treat.
This is a delightful mother-daughter team from the restaurant.
The mother offered to take our picture and then Lona got into an exteeended conversation with her that went ooooon and ooooon and.
I was sitting there at the table totally cracking up inside. It was all just so MOM. I’m pretty sure I saw Lona fishing around in her purse for some tracts to pass out…
May 6
Ahhh, Home Sweet Home, and when I got in, look what I found on the couch. .Isn’t that just the SWEETEST!!
Where have I been? Kauai, the Garden Isle, Hawaii, The Big Island and Honolulu with the fam.
April 5
Happy Birthday DARRYL! Lilly didn’t make it through the party as it was late and she needed to Sleep. But still, we had a totally lovely time.
Angela put this all together including the hats which of course you need to have Hats, it’s a Party!
And multiple cakes and forty-two candles which Darryl blew out in one breath so his wish will come true!
April 6
It’s 6:30 in the morning and I’m packin’ my bag. .Next pictures – Kauai, Hawaii! ALOHA!!

A picture from my Supreme Court visit in November 2010. The ruling on one of the cases for which I saw oral arguments came in today.
Guess what: I didn’t like the outcome, really really don’t like the outcome. From the NPR story “A deeply divided U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that taxpayers have no legal right to challenge a tax break worth millions to donors supporting private religious schools. The 5-4 decision left intact an Arizona tax subsidy that was enacted because the state constitution forbids direct aid to religious schools.
“… Justice Elena Kagan, in a blistering dissent — her first dissent since joining the court — said Monday’s decision “devastates” the ability of taxpayers to challenge government actions that favor religion.
“In reality, she said, there is no difference between a tax credit and a direct appropriation. “What is a cash grant today can be a tax break tomorrow,” and the court’s decision, she charged, “offers a road map — more truly, just a one-step instruction — to any government that wishes to insulate its financing of religious activity from legal challenge.””
You can read more about it on the All Things Considered site for today’s broadcast.
April 3
Happy Birthday Big D (on Tuesday actually)! We gathered at the Hammer Museum for a hit of culture and then enjoyed a lovely lunch at a vegetarian place where Darryl could order anything on the menu.
I’ve started working on a Griffith Observatory chapter. No words yet, just collecting the pictures from a few visits.
April 2
Walking home from dropping off the car at the fix-it place. I love my neighborhood.
April 1
Muriel and I went up to Pepperdine today to walk some laps on their gorgeous fantastic track, have a moment in their chapel, eat a yummy and entertaining lunch at the Student Union…
…and visit the on-campus Weisman Museum of Art. Yet another Weisman! That guy, and his foundation gets around.
The truly fabulous Weisman House Tour.
The Frank Gerhy designed Weisman at the University of Minnesota.
There are also large collections donated to various municipal institutions. Always worth a look.
It’s free to visit – this guy was the attendant and played classical guitar beautifully during our entire visit. It was a joy.
March 31
It’s me and my Japanese teacher Hana out for lunch and a stroll on Abbott Kinney. Everyone she knows back home is fine.
When I first heard of the earthquake I had such a concern for Hana, especially as she was so far from her extended family. She and her family lost so much, including loss of life, during the Kobe earthquake in 1995 I knew this news would be particularly hard for her. She said when she first heard there was an earthquake in Japan her mind went white.
Her sons have definitely improved in their correspondence since the earthquake!
I met Marsha at the Observatory. Marsha LOVES LA but still she hadn’t yet made it up to see the renovations. NOoo! I really wanted it to happen before I left and am so glad it worked out that we could do it together.
Yup, a slice of LA.
Just out of view on the left is Dodger Stadium where Opening Night was in full swing.
Since I was passing right by Ben and Bonnie’s house on the way home I wanted to stop in to make sure Bonnie didn’t have any questions or problems with the bookkeeping system we’ve been organizing.
Who arrived a few minutes after I did? The Boys who had been at the Dodger game. They were quite thrilled. Then they settled in to watch the end of the Laker game on t-vo. Isn’t it nice to know that however much changes some things stay the same?
Carl, Ben, Lew (you go Lew go Dodgers)
March 30
In anticipation of being away for 5 weeks, and because Angela changed her school day to accommodate another parent, I was with the kids again today.
Angela sent these two pictures from the classroom. OMG. Rome was doing her daily journal and she wrote that she was going to get to see her Granny again for a second day in a row and drew our picture together. You can’t miss that it’s me for sure, cute as it is.
The other picture is from rest time. Rome and her friends, young girls, so SO adorable.
ak.
Lilly just looves to be in her big sister’s room.
She has taken up the expression ‘thank you’ whenever you give her something. The leading consonant is not usually the ‘th’ sound but her intention is entirely clear. You kind’a want to give her something just to hear her say it.
March 26
A picture of me and Nancy – I don’t always take a picture at movie dates and lunch outings but this one just had to be had.
Kathleen invited me over to meet an old friend visiting from Boston and a friend of hers who lives here. It was fun, thanks!
Kathleen, Bruce, Claire
March 25
My plans for today got canceled so I spent 10-12-15 hours reading up for my Africa trip.
I’ve made big progress and have a sample program to send to the advice boards for comment. Waiting now to hear ‘that’s an impossible idea’ or better, ‘that’s a great plan’. We’ll see, probably neither but something in between.
Liz let me join her and her friend Elaina for a lovely walk along the bluffs, a tasty and entertaining lunch, and a stroll down the Promenade to the pier.
Liz and Elaina met as YouTube friends. I learned about a whole ‘nother world out there.
March 24
There is a whole pigeon pack that hangs out under the Santa Monica Yacht Harbor archway, entrance to the pier.
March 23
Tonight looking through the living room window at Brigitte’s, we find the neighborhood cat who lives outside and is attended to with great devotion by Knut and Brigitte and probably others too. This is one well-fed well-loved stray cat.
From now Brigitte is traveling until basically June and then in the not too distant future they’ll be moving back to Europe. I am wishing them all the best and already looking forward to a visit.
