…where we enjoyed a…

…where we enjoyed a concert put on by a Wind Band. It was really good fun and I only wish there had been more takers. When an event is so lightly attended there’s always the chance that they’ll stop doing them and that would be too bad.

At least the restaurant where we ate dinner, Pitfire Pizza, was fairly full and they delivered tasty food too.

The Metro was like…

The Metro was like the concert in that when we went downtown it was the start of rush hour, the streets were in gridlock, but the Metro was very lightly subscribed – we all got seats.

On the way back it was about 8pm and emptier still. It was easy, clean, safe, fast, and not even that expensive. But we Angelinos just don’t fancy public transportation. Could it be the traffic still isn’t bad enough?

This house is near the OP Café, across the street from Darryl’s work, where DAK&L plus Cynthia, Windy, and I all met for lunch. That was a festive occasion! Thanks Angela for the photo.

Trevor’s office is looking for a new bio-pic and they took 100 of them. The pictures were shaped differently as they are here.

I like the one on the left…they like the one on the right.

August 1-2

DAK&L gave me the orchid three weeks ago and it hasn’t dropped a single flower. I checked it again today just to reconfirm that it is not simply a very excellent fake.

I haven’t opened Proust…

I haven’t opened Proust for weeks now so I decided to give myself a break and read a best-seller quick before the movie comes out. It’s easy and entertaining and interesting and well designed, something to finish in a long free day .. and compared to Proust, a walk in the park.

Wild is set on the Pacific Crest Trail. Now I think I might re-read Bill Bryson’s Appalachian Trail journal called A Walk in the Woods.

Yes. They made a track, dug up some bugs, and cheered them on. You go roly-poly!

Hello sweetie, it’s been a while. Mass that you are, the sight of you always lightens my spirit and brings a smile to my face…Levitates we could even say…

Susie took me to LACMA for my birthday. We saw the Van Gogh to Kandinsky show and ate a feast at Ray’s.

…and I snagged this with my phone, me with one of Picasso’s Ladies, which turned out to be in the no-photo zone but that wasn’t clear at the time.

Beach walk!

The internet seems to say that this park is still in Santa Monica, not in Venice (which is part of LA) as I had thought, and called ‘Captains Of The Ship: South Beach Park Playground’. I’ll have to double-check this next time I walk by.

Lunch at Figtree, our favorite beach walk turn-around spot. The singers who get this location in the entertainer’s lottery (I think that’s how it works?) are usually surprisingly good.

July 24

Kieran is off to camp and Cynthia is here in Cali, settled into my little studio out back, to stick around for a few weeks and I’m so excited!

From an early morning walk in Solstice Canyon. Now that the track at Pepperdine is torn up for the summer we are looking for a few alternate routes.

…I had another great walk with my sister Lona at the jetty.

I got home on the 1st and here it is the morning of the 21st and I’m just now actually feeling rather normal. So that’s three weeks to full recovery from a six week trip. I’m old!

The kids and I…

July 16

The kids and I went out for a walking adventure to get pizza. It’s a schlep and they all held up like troupers. Everyone got just what she wanted. Then because our feet were hot from walking we stopped off at the park to wiggle our toes in the cool soft grass.

Bailey was with us for lunch and then…

Today Cynthia sent this picture of Kieran out in the back yard (in Saint Paul MN so the kids don’t have a chance to get together too often). Don’t you wish you had one of those swings.

Trevor has been here…

July 15

Trevor has been here for a couple of weeks now to help his parents and Christa came a few days ago too.

Christa and other young volunteers spent the last two months with a missionary group in Guatemala. As well as missionary activities she was working in a hospital and in village medical clinics where she learned how to do the type of procedures that would have required a skilled nursing degree here.

What an awesome experience for her break between sophomore and junior year at Liberty College. And yes indeed she can habla some mighty fine español. This is her home-stay family.

Trevor and Christa both went back to Hawaii today. We will miss you!

Hartley had a stroke…

July 12

Hartley had a stroke back in March, he was improving in April, he had evened out in May, and taken a turn for the worse in June. He’s in the hospital now while they try to figure out what to do next.

Lona is soooo tired. She asked me ‘quick, quick, what’s the name of that dictator in Cuba?’ ‘Castro’ I replied. ‘Castro! Castro!’ she called out. After a couple of call-outs this fellow turned around. Can you see his name tag? Fidel. He took it in such good spirit. ‘It happens all the time’ he said.

…another lawn chair outing…

…another lawn chair outing with Ben and Bonnie. We did it last Saturday night too. This time we saw the dance troupe Invertigo and then Twelfth Night by the Independent Shakespeare Company.

The dancers were fun to watch and the Shakespeare group of actors was particularly excellent.

July 11

The cousins Nancy and Sharon took me out for a birthday lunch at C&O in Venice. Thank you ladies, it was lovely!

Then Nancy and I went for a short walk on the canals. It wasn’t very long because I punked out from the sun. Here’s Nancy all glam in her sunglasses and hat.

I haven’t known David for very long but this wonderful collection makes me think we’ve been friends for forever. A niece helped curate the collection and do the hanging. Nice!

July 5

Happy Birthday to Me from DAK&L! Breakfast out and then a visit to Darryl’s officeat ActiVision (my choice!) , home of the Call of Duty franchise, Guitar Hero, and others but what the kids looove is Skylanders.

It’s a playground in there. Everyone has to play the games. It’s part of their job.

In the evening I…

In the evening I went with Ben and Bonnie to a get-together organized by Richard to see a totally entertaining free show at the Levitt Pavilion.

Vaud and the Villains: they bill themselves as a 19 piece 1930s New Orleans Orchestra and Cabaret Show. And that they were!

May 16

Everyone dances at the taverna! I watched a few hours of Greek dancers on youtube today, because Everyone dances at the taverna! I can do the simplest-simplest series of steps now but that’s not to say that anyone will ever do that particular one. I can do a second series but not Nearly fast enough.

Maybe I’ll take a lesson – that would be FUN!

I have been doing this and that but not taking any pictures. Now I’ll not be able to remember, for example, the last time I saw Susie.

May 15

Awwww, Cynthia broke her foot and she’s got 6-8 weeks during which she must not put any weight on it, and she Must wear The Boot. She sent this picture with the title “Look Ma! No Hands!”

Kieran, on his way to Kung Fu class, is wearing his wushu sash. He’s doing so well and keeps getting promoted every few months into a new sash. Good job Kieran!

Lilly and I went…

May 14

Lilly and I went to the beach this morning and met up with a couple of her friends and their moms. They are all very lovely.

I let Angela convince me to take the bigger chair and the umbrella, and we had toys and lunch and changes of clothes and etc. It was amazingly wonderful since I was entirely out of the sun. I sat in that great chair under the shade of the umbrella while a gentle breeze cooled the air and Lilly was so happily on the go-go from moment first to moment last. Nice!

May 10

Yes, Clothes. I went to lunch with the cousins Sharon and Nancy, and Sharon guided me through the shopping morass and I came out the other end with Clothes.

One more shirt and I can get ride of those two tops, you know the ones, the burgundy one and the hunter one that I’ve been wearing for YEARS.

In the bag: a pair of knock-around boater length pants so I won’t be wearing my black Patagonias every day as I have been since 2009; a bright pink cami for under a black tee which looks pretty cute; a nicer top that I’m going to wear this very day; a spaghetti strap sundress that needs hemming.

It was Iggy’s birthday…

May 7

It was Iggy’s birthday party at Adventure Plex, a huge Habitrail for Children. These are all the kids in Lilly’s pre-school class and they crawled and jumped and ran around like precious furry little hamsters for two solid hours breaking only for the few minutes it took to scarf down some pizza and cupcakes.

And a grand time was had by all!

I’m getting picked up…

May 18

I’m getting picked up by SuperShuttle at 5AM In The Morning for a flight at 8:25AM, change planes in Montreal, and arrive in Athens at 10:15 the morning of the 20th, then I’ll get the airport transfer to the port town of Piraeus where I’ll spend the night, then the next morning at 7:30 I’ll catch the ferry to Naxos arriving finally at my first Greek island around noon on the 21st.

It’s long but not too bad with the breaks in Montreal and Piraeus. I’m excited!

May 1

Home sweet home, wow…bringing the Aloha Spirit to dim sum lunch with Marsha downtown. We ate at Ocean Seafood in the old Miriwa building, these stairs being the scene, Marsha tells me, of a well-known Mel Gibson movie.

Then Windy dropped by…

Then Windy dropped by for a nice Welcome Home and all I had to offer her was a glass of water and a flower hair clip. A Glass Of Water.

I’d better toddle myself over to my pantry at Whole Foods for some whole foods.

Here’s looking at Royce…

Here’s looking at Royce Hall from one of the windows in the Powell Library.

If you haven’t been to this library in a while you won’t be sorry if you stop by. Just the tiles alone make it worth a visit.

It has come up…

It has come up a lot recently, ‘where the heck was Pacific Ocean Park anyway?’.

Pacific Ocean Park, also known as POP, and most often pronounced Pee-Oh-Pee, was located between Pier and Navy, where now we find the luxury low-rise housing complex called Sea Colony.

Opened in 1958 and closed in 1967, it’s surprising to me to notice that such an iconic name from ‘our’ youth operated for less than 10 years. The city didn’t actually tear down the pier until 1975.

April 3

This morning I spent Three Hours cleaning the floor of the cottage even after Cecelia and Victor spent seven hours each cleaning. And it’s not done yet!

In the afternoon I did a photo project for Lona and Hartley and then in the evening I had dinner with Bill. Big day!

I went to a late afternoon concert by the Angeles Chorale. It was a lot of Brahms and a little of other composers as well, and entirely enjoyable.

After the show I had dinner with Marsha and Tom, made by Tom and hence, of course, delicious.

March 29

Fun Day! I met Darryl and Angela and Rome and Lilly at the Santa Monica Playhouse where we saw a delightful community theater production of ‘Alice and the Wonderful Tea Party’.

Everything about it was entirely charming and everyone enjoyed it completely but I do feel obliged to note that here we are in a community of actors, actors come here from far and wide to act, we train actors in many world class institutions so what with all that, still, come to the Santa Monica Playhouse expecting ‘community theater’.

Then we walked over…

Then we walked over to Tongva to fool around in the children’s playground, then we had a really fine meal at True Food, then we walked down the Promenade for some street entertainment…

Burt and Charlene came…

Burt and Charlene came out west today for lunch and a stroll. It was a lovely day.

I also got to gaga over Burt’s new car. Burt’s initials being BMW, and knowing Burt you could understand that this was reason enough, he has always lusted for a BMW and back in the long-ago days of his youth he had one of those little Datsun convertibles and has been lusting for a convertible ever since that one died.

And there it was up on a dealership’s pedestal, screaming BUUURT, a nine year old BMW 330i convertible. Two birds; one stone.

March 26

Is it? Yes it is. Chuck E Cheese. Of all the times I’ve been to Chuck E Cheese this was by far the least annoying. It wasn’t crowded, it wasn’t noisy, and it wasn’t even that expensive. We had a great time, Lilly and I.
