Getting ready to go…
December 26
Getting ready to go to Saint Paul MN tomorrow to spend a couple of weeks with Cynthia. Oh Goodie! And yes indeed-y I have plenty of clothes. Yikes, and wind chill!
I’m am going to be SEVENTY YEARS OLD in 2017. SEVENTY.

December 25
Gosh, I haven’t composed the words to express our delightful DeeeLIGHTFUL Christmas Eve and Christams Morning.
December 24
I have more pictures from this awesome event where every child and grandchild of the twins Marija and Ljubica showed up for Christmas Eve dinner along with other family members, friends, and neighbors.
We had fancy little sandwiches, a nice salad, and sweets to beat the band.
Lona made an old family favorite, candy cane cookies. Windy brought our traditional See’s Candy BINGE, and I made a Pavlova that was yummy.
December 23
My sisters came over for New Year’s Tea since I’m going to be gone.
December 21-22
I went to meet Alex and Carol for a stroll around Naples and a sleepover aboard Nepenthe.
December 19
I had early chili dinner at Sharon’s (YUM!) and this is one of her many holiday tableaux. So sweet! And then delicious leftovers for breakfast, my favorite.
Darryl, Rome, Lilly, and Angela having a selfie at Mammoth, their annual vacation winter wonderland!
This year I bought the beaded hummingbirds from Cecilia’s church bazaar, and the doves and the glass birds from around town.
December 18
Here come 100 pictures of my tree. Definitely not all the goodies are here, oh no there are 1000 more, but I had to call a halt. If I get to needing more I can take more pictures, all delights to My eyes. Every view makes me smile.
The tree is a fake 6 footer and this is its second year…my second year returned to the house since I went back in in November 2016.
The first year I got out all the bits I’d saved over the years which didn’t amount to too much and then I made a dozen+ origami birds and bought the fake tinsel.
It was a matinee, 20 minutes walk from my house, and in a good-sound venue. We were in the second to the last row but at intermission we moved to the third row…very better, as if they were playing in my living room!
December 17
Muriel had an extra ticket for this show and I was delighted to buy it from her.
December 15
I saw this movie with Nancy, Faces Places is the English title. The movie is in French, made by these two who traveled the French countryside for a few months in a van with a giant printer (and a good sized crew) doing very site specific paste-ups.
It was wonderful!
From promotional text: “89-year old Agnes Varda, one of the leading figures of the French New Wave, and acclaimed 33 year-old French photographer and muralist JR teamed up to co-direct this enchanting documentary/road movie. Kindred spirits, Varda and JR share a lifelong passion for images and how they are created, displayed, and shared.”

December 13
No pictures of the kids on Tuesday and no pictures of the beach on Wednesday but YES, a picture of Kai from Cynthia, enjoying his new toy.
cc.
December 14
Bonnie and I had a Lovely Ladies Lunch and Museum afternoon. It’s always cool to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood sign. We’re on the balcony of the Marciano Art Foundation Museum.
The big Jim Shaw exhibit that takes up the whole main floor is still there and will run through the middle of January.
Here are a lot more pictures of the Jim Shaw: Wig Museum show.
They also had a Pacific Standard Time contribution that we enjoyed well enough although it wasn’t one of those can’t-be-missed exhibits.
This was cool, a three story house furnishings on cords.
December 11
Our Party of the Year, we’ve been having this exact party at Alicia’s since 2004, full of fabulous food and festivity. Not to mention gifts!
Me, Ljubica, Maxine, Becky, Alicia, Ann, Marsha, Marjia, Lourdes (we missed you Maryanne!)
December 10
Ken and I had a good day. We ate, sat in cars, listened to music, and enjoyed an extended visit. Thanks Ken!
Also, on and off for the last few days, first I watched the whole season 1 again, and then season 2. It’s a good show. It makes you want to look up things.
December 8
I’m going to want a bunch of pictures of my tree too. I smile every time I catch sight of it.
December 9
Maxine’s annual holiday party! I took two pictures. See the photo in the phone. That’s Geri’s Croatian mother with Marija who hardly ever gets to meet people who know about Croatia!
Maxine’s daughter and co-host Shirley in the middle and friends from the neighborhood.
I’ve been coming to this party for so many Christmases now that I very much look forward to having a chat with all the people I get to see once a year.
Holiday Best to one and all!
December 5
In the plaza of the shopping center where the girls have their dentist. Their dentist’s office is the amusement park of dentist offices and I got a good kick out of looking around.
Then we spent 5-10 minutes picking out their going-to-the-dentist prize. I should have taken a picture of that!
December 1-4
Some catch-up.
Muriel and I went for a stroll on one of the Marina del Rey jetties.
…and then we went to the Garden Center and spent money. I didn’t buy a rain chain yet but now I know they have them here. Soon!
I discovered some missing pictures from my Australia story, like this Roadhouse on the drive from Uluru to Alice Springs where I picked up four hitchhiking local people and drove them to the next roadhouse an hour away. It was quite the experience!
And I missed a whole day from Sydney including a great run to Manley and a stroll through the Royal Botanical Garden that you can find on the link.
November 27
Check it out, three of the four indistinguishable whites in my house – ceiling, wall, trim. The trim paint is on the walls of the kitchen and bathroom and the trim in those rooms is slightly lighter.
The white on the living room/dining room/bedroom walls goes from a little creamy to a little rosy as the sun moves across the sky…I like it!
November 28
Alicia’s husband Chris passed recently and she had a tender and loving service and reception in his honor.
This is some etched glass at the church that reminded me of the angles at the Cathedral downtown.
In the evening I had dinner with Windy and we went to a rousing performance of Spamilton which was a full-on delight. We laughed and clapped for the entire 80 minute show.
Here are a couple of pictures Windy got from a friend who took the pictures out of a yearbook. I need to find out how old she is here!
November 26
I went with Pauli for her first experience of Century City. We enjoyed the Annenberg Space for Photography whose Pacific Standard Time show was of Cuba then and now. It was wonderful as always at the Annenberg.
We were taken by the Edison Light Christmas Tree in one of the lobbies. All the buildings on a bright and beautiful Sunday were stark and compelling, and we ate a delicious lunch at Obica Mozzarella Bar in the newly expanded Century City Mall.
Century City on Sunday is the way to go.
November 25
Thanksgiving leftovers! So many Thanks!!
Also we’re enjoying a bottle of beer made at home by one of my tenants. She bottled it at The Hammer where all the employees were doing a craft beer project. We liked it!
Gideon, Celina, Steven
There was a wine reception on the roof garden before the ‘pre-game show’ where the conductor talked about the program which we always like to attend.
Marsha Marsha Thank You Thank You!
Rome and Lilly picking names for the Monday Night Secret Santa Extravaganza.
A feast I tell you, a Feast!
Lilly: pumpkin pie
Rome: tacos
Liz: pumpkin bread; cranberry relish (like my mom used to make!)
Me: stuffed squash; orange and fennel salad; roasted cauliflower and tomatoes with those crispy Thanksgiving onions out of the can
Angela: corn bread; rice salad; beet salad; roasted Brussel sprouts
Darryl: kale and garlic mashed potatoes; mushroom and onion casserole; warm cabbage salad
Lilly conceived this project, selected the pictures, and did a good part of the photoshop too. Unicorn day (yes, a new shopping opportunity – Unicorn Day?!) is, according to google, on April 9 so she’s ahead of the game here.
November 20
Sharon and I went to check out the new configuration at the Century City Mall. Since the Westside Pavilion is going to close soon, I decided to like it. It’s fine, there’s a big Cineplex, and about the same distance from home, so ok.
…my new tenant and a friend of hers who were looking through all the old film cameras they had both collected from family and friends. The question was where to get that film developed.
November 19
I spoiled all the pictures with Hilda. Too bad. Hilda and Merlyn came over and we cooked a Persian Dinner of Fattoush Salad, Fresh Herb Khoresh, and Persian rice perfection. Kathleen from across the street came for the meal.
I also had to run the hand mixer twice, once for the Pavlova and once for the whipped cream that went on top. I discovered that if I stand on that stool I make a much smaller mess. Standing on the stool meant I was so very tall I could keep the mixer straight in the bowl.
Then I noticed I was still shorter than Merlyn!
ht.
Here is Pavlova with whipped cream and Persian cherries. When I make Pavlova again I’m going to make it exactly like this one. Let’s see if it comes out the same.

(4 egg whites room temperature; 3/4 cup fine sugar; 1 tsp each vanilla, lemon juice, corn starch; inside 8″ to be tall enough; 1 hour 250 deg convection; sit in the oven 3+/- hours; 1/2 hour 250 deg convection; sit again until ready to use)
November 11-17 .. I missed a whole week!
I had lunch with Boban and it was delightful to catch up, as always. Thanks for coming out!
I got this picture from Boban back in 2005. Now Jordan is going to college and the younger one, Cheyenne, is in the 7th grade. Cheyenne is several months older than Rome but still now 12. Rome is 12. I had forgotten how close they were in age. How could I possibly forget that?! It’s only been 12 years.
While Lilly was at dance class Rome and I took a quick buzz around the Redondo Beach Pier. One of these days I need to just sit here and wait for some cool silhouettes.
I went early to Monday potluck at Ann’s and we practiced Cuban Motion from a video she made of her teacher. It was good fun and I hope we do it again.
A view from my front porch As It Was…mostly…
I also had a walk on the track at Pepperdine and one of my favorite lunches at The Reel with Sharon. And I went swimming with Kathleen at SMC. I don’t remember what else happened this week because I don’t have a picture!
Ah! and I also had two big plans fall through which contributes to the shortage of pictures.
Lona’s had a vacancy and we’ve been putting ads all over town.
One day she was taking selfies in a mirror because she liked how her hair came out that day and she wanted a picture for her funeral. This is not the one!
I said Good Idea I want a picture for my funeral too. So I looked at old pictures of myself. I might have to give up on growing my hair into a ponytail. I want my curls back!
November 10
A visit to Bergamot Station where the galleries are beginning a migration to other locations. I think there isn’t a plan yet for the property but redevelopment is inevitable.
…where we were both nuts for their Pacific Standard Time offering, a comprehensive retrospective of the work of Anna Maria Maiolino.
Anna Maria Maiolino, never heard of her before and love her now.
(moca pic)
November 9
Happy Birthday Susie! We had a kickin’ downtown day.
First stop: MOCA…
They had a ton of Rothko’s large canvases out, a big room full of them. It was awesome to see so many at once.
We walked on to PYT for a delicious lunch, then we did the walk-walk-walk through The Last Bookstore and finally…
…we swung by the LA Main Library to see the PST murals that were exciting again. Thanks Susie, it was Great!
November 7
From Rome’s phone. Among the many little delights of today we went around the block to take these pictures, one from my seat…
November 6
In amazon prime video you can watch all the seasons of Six Feet Under, which I stumbled upon this morning and clicked Season 1 Episode 1 just for a reminder of what it was like.
It’s so good. I’m now on episode 7 and this might become a problem.
Evening update: ok, after 10 or so episodes I’m pretty done for now. Maybe I’ll watch more next year.
November 5
Lill and I went to Palos Verdes today to kick around and snap some pics. It was a gorgeous day, cool, bright, and fresh.
We enjoyed a yummy lunch at the always welcoming Nelson’s, Terranea’s Oceanfront CafĂ©…
Then a quick swing by the Wayfarer’s Chapel, and then back home.
Lill drove, thank you – that splendid Palos Verdes is not so far as the crow flies but it knows no freeway and can take an hour or more one way even on the weekend.
November 4
Sorry Louise, not the best picture but you’re too adorable to miss! Marija, Ljubica, and I went out to Palmdale to visit with my Northridge next door neighbor Louise and a grand time was had by all.
November 3
That’s Sharon back there by the fence taking in the sights and smells of a beautiful day in Palisades Park.
November 1
I went to water aerobics at Santa Monica College with Kathleen from across the street. We came back to my place to watch the last innings of the Dodger game on a borrowed TV, In My House. It was the first actual program I’ve watched on TV here. Ok ok, I might have to get a tv.
It’ll need to go on the wall because there is just no room for a stand. I suppose I could keep doing this.
