Daily Life 2001-2003 (in my Gray People phase)

Did I mention ice…

Did I mention ice cream? Christa-coffee with double chocolate sauce, Caleb-chocolate with no sauce. I thought I was going to let them eat ice cream Any Time They Wanted. I thought I was going to let them eat ice cream until they couldn’t eat even one more bite of ice cream. But I was wrong. As is Always the case with kids, they will outlast you. On a couple of occasions I had to say ‘no, you just have to eat some food before you can have more ice cream’.

And we did eat food. Every meal like this, with only a few exceptions.

Breakfast: Room Service delivers a plain bagel with margarine for Christa, a huge pile of bacon for Caleb and then we get ice cream.
Lunch: From Deck Service Christa gets a plain pizza, Caleb gets a plain hamburger and then we get ice cream.
Dinner: From Room Service or from Deck Service Christa gets a plain pizza, Caleb gets a plain hamburger and then we get ice cream.

During the day we get ice cream many times from the ice cream bar and at night before bed we get ice cream from room service. One time Christa went to get ice cream for herself and Caleb. She asked for coffee with double chocolate sauce and a chocolate with chocolate sauce. The guy at the ice cream bar said ‘but your brother doesn’t get chocolate sauce’. They knew.

And although all the…

And although all the curators were buzzing around our work, we couldn’t leave them for general exhibit of course, because they are Gifts! for Windy! Happy Birthday!

It was going to…

It was going to be Windy’s birthday and Lona and I had been fooling around with some ideas for a party. Before we had come up with The idea Windy said how much she hoped she’d be able to see the French Impressionist show at LACMA.

Voila! a theme. And no, we didn’t just get out of the shower and no, we are not all prepped for surgery. We are A*rt*ists!

Sandy’s art show! …

Sandy’s art show! Everybody who was Anybody was there. Darryl and Angela came, and Nancy, and Roger of course who did ALL the heavy lifting and without whom it wouldn’t have happened. Roger went and got Sandy’s parents so they could come. Some friends of Roger’s from work came.

And here we have The Fam. Randy, the father of China, Dori, the sister of Randy, China, the daughter, Doug, the daughter’s fiancée, Charlie, Randy’s wife of more than 20 years and one of Sandy’s best friends, and Beverly, a part of Sandy’s travel business and a dear friend.

It’s a bit embarrassing, not that that stops me necessarily, getting a crowd to line-em-up. I should have snapped a few more times as, sorry gang, this was the only one so this is it and no matter What Sandy looks gorgeous in Every picture.

Me and my dear…

Me and my dear friends, the Valley Girls, gathered for our Christmas Gift Exchange – from the top and around – Alicia, Becky, Marsha, Maxine, Maryanne, me, Marija, Violet, Lourdes.

And here we are…

And here we are 10 years ago. Wow. (I’m putting these two pictures on my wall as motivation to lose weight…so, let’s see what next year brings!)

Hilda and Merlyn, sitting…

Hilda and Merlyn, sitting in front of their gigantic and georgous fireplace.

This was my first visit to their new home and let-me-tell-you that place is a knock-out. A hacienda for the ruling class, up off Mulhulland, vista views of the valley, with soaring ceilings, arches and alcoves and tile like you wouldn’t believe, gorgeous furnishings Hilda brought back from Iran and around the world, and floors and paint and windows of style and panache. They don’t know it yet but I’m coming back during the day next time!

And I won’t even tell you about the dinner because you’ll just go and get all jealous.

Then it’s Saturday night…

Then it’s Saturday night pasta dinner at Ken’s where we leave early and the rest of them play games and whoop it up into the night.

Thank you Ken!…

Thank you Ken!

So then I get up in the dark, Bill comes over and we load the bikes, hit the freeway, scavenge a parking place, and ride to where the other 16,998 bikers are gathered.

The ride is supposed to start at 6am but the crowds are so huge that once you reach the start you’ve been walking for several blocks and you’ll walk a bit more until the people in front of you have spread out.

Gwen and Al. …

Gwen and Al. Gwen’s mother is Japanese and her father is Chinese. She was born in Peru and carries a Peruvian passport, lived in Japan and Taiwan, went to college in Switzerland at a UK based school, worked here and there around the world and now she is in LA, working at Crystal, married to this kid from the midwest who hadn’t been out of the US when they met. Fun!

Linda is SIXTY. …

Linda is SIXTY. She put on an entirely lovely festivity – formal wear, cocktails, dinner, demonstrations and a great opportunity for Linda and her friends to go out Dancing.

Linda is my dancing idol you know. When I first saw her look-turn-look I about melted with desire. Oh me too, I want to do that toooo, show me show me show me and endless instructions to Ken ‘I want to do it like Linda does it’. That was always good for a laugh.

“The critics are raving:…

“The critics are raving: ‘A marvelous opportunity to enjoy Cinema at its best, in a charming, relaxed yet attentive, down-home environment.’ ‘You couldn’t imagine a more comfortable venue.’ ‘A Total Delight!'”

Darryl and Angela got…

Darryl and Angela got a honkin’ new TV. Here is Angela’s email:

We went to see…

We went to see ‘Menopause, The Musical’. The show had been running for months but still the theater was packed to the rafters with huge noisy groups Just Like Us. The four men in the audience couldn’t use their bathroom because women were always in there.

We howled and whistled and slapped our knee. Not to say it was even good but it was a Great night out.

It was Lona’s birthday…

It was Lona’s birthday and we girls went over there to Clean The House. We worked from 9am to 11pm and couldn’t have been happier to do it because Lona was sooo happy.

We’re here practicing our chin-covering moves. Cynthia was going like all ‘huh?’ ‘what?’ ‘I don’t get it’. We didn’t yell at her or anything. As is so often the case, I forgot to stand in back and my enormous head dominates the entire picture.

On the patio of…

On the patio of a newest West Hollywood ‘uber trendy yet Michelin serious’ French restaurant.

John’s going away party….

John’s going away party. I wish him Only The Best even though… From the left Monica, Kirby, Dale, Kimberly, Greg, Cathy, David, Tai.

While I’m taking the…

While I’m taking the picture of the umbrellas we’re gossiping about these two women – are they in the biz? are they food writers? are they ladies who lunch? They are so perfectly color coordinated with the restaurant, in taupe and white.

The woman in glasses walks over to me and in most urgent tones asks if I might please take a picture of her and her sister as they get together so rarely and it would mean so much to her to have this photo. ‘No problem at all, here, let’s do it now’ I say. The sister in gray tells the sister in glasses ‘just don’t grin all goofy like you always do’. Yikes.

At the end of their meal the sister in glasses leaves and the sister in gray comes over to tell a story about her sister’s husband’s illness and she wanted me to know that in fact she comes here from Texas at least once a month but she did know how her sister was suffering and thanked me for taking the picture.

Just goes to show. You can’t hope to guess.

more. From front…

more. From front right and around Veronika (who is really a cheery person and who Never smiles in a photo), Kamal, Chris, Robert, Rober, John, Charles, Diane.

In situations like this…

In situations like this I am so often reminded of the adage ‘you get what you pay for’. It isn’t true, entirely, of course. But often, it is.

David’s retirement. We…

David’s retirement. We printed on his cake ‘you have always been strange just don’t be a stranger’. I wish him Only The Best too. JZ is gone, David is gone and William is leaving at the end of summer. It will be entertaining to watch the personality of our department evolve!

From front right and around Kamal, Mary Lou, Veronika, me, Dan, William, Charles, Greg, David, Bill, John (he gets to be the only John now). Office folks missing Robert, Chris, Alex, Bernie, Boban.

An hour or two…

An hour or two at sunset in Roger and Sandy’s new neighborhood of Culver City.

What is obvious – low buildings and wide streets leaves more light later in the day which makes for that great streaming sun and sunset glow.

A gas station wall,…

A gas station wall, in readiness for more 4th of July flag @#$%. You know how I feel about religious and patriotic symbols. They work just so darn well.

Dear old friend Steven…

Dear old friend Steven and sweet dear Celina, Gideon being home with the babysitter. Tomorrow Steven is going to start his one year disabling treatment for his potentially life threatening condition. They’re going to have some challenging times ahead!

GreatGrams, Grandma and Mom…

GreatGrams, Grandma and Mom (Mom, Lona and Beth…) created this lovely and most unexpected July 4th festivo. Note the canon, the musket, the Declaration of Independence, the colorful bunting – all traditional and required decorations for the occasion. Christa and Caleb were off with Janice and Charis was resting so here we are, all grown up.

Sandy had her party…

Sandy had her party this year too and it was especially swell because it was the celebration of Sarah’s final adoption. And she’s Jewish now too.

From the patio of…

From the patio of a Century City hotel. It seems that this summer I simply refuse to resist an umbrella.

This guy and his…

This guy and his partner were sitting out on the porch of this entirely purple and yellow house. We chatted briefly and he said some people love it and some people hate it and some people don’t care.

I think the people who don’t care probably aggressively don’t care like ‘it’s your house and this is a free country and it’s not for me to say’ because you can’t be indifferent about a purple house.

We watched Seabiscuit. …

We watched Seabiscuit. I cried of course. Then we ate and then we walked down to Shutters to look at the wedding setup there because Angela loves it there sooooo much.

Some of us in light, some in shadow, bright background – group shots are tough. Notice how I eliminated every single line and shadow from my neck. It’s pretty silly but hey.

Waiters at Black Forest….

Waiters at Black Forest. I took this picture and the very next thing, seconds later, these guys had turned to the counter where they were standing and without missing a beat began writing their email addresses on bar napkins. It’s a way of life!

Stacy and Carrie -…

Stacy and Carrie – Stacy packing up. Step one in the last chapter of my ten year plan. From now on I’m not making any plan past two years. That’s my new 10 year plan.

I got back the…

I got back the day before Thanksgiving and this is the only halfway not horrible picture from the lovely party at Lucas and Betsy’s place. I had a thousand pictures backed up from the trip and apparently I couldn’t have another one.

This was the year when Thanksgiving fell on a Friday…

Liz gave gifts to…

Liz gave gifts to the kids that were subsequently re-gifted back, and are now prominently displayed as a daily enjoyment to all who pass by.

D&A and I went…

D&A and I went to the Santa Monica Crafts Exhibition where Angela’s boss was set up for one of her more profitable weekends. That’s her, Judy, in front and also Connie, Judy’s traveling assistant.

Cynthia heard a story…

Cynthia heard a story about Phillipes on the radio and it made her mouth neeeed to go, so we went, on Sunday. It was absolutely the same as ever and isn’t that the point, isn’t that what it’s all about anyway.

Then we walked over to Olvera Street and WOW, Day of the Dead! The place was Raging! At this point however we hadn’t figured that out yet and I thought 1) what are all these people doing here and 2) what’s with these kids.

The ever popular glass…

The ever popular glass blowers. If the glass blowers aren’t working, Olvera Street is missing a part of its soul.

This guy was making a pig. I knocked on the window. ‘Say, can you add wings to that pig?’ ‘I was just going to do that.’ ‘It looks perfect but now can you add a hanging loop?’ ‘Oh, fine.’ ‘Oooo, can I buy it?’ ‘I made it for you.’ ‘Sold,’ five bucks.

When pigs fly!

Cathi, our birthday girl….

Cathi, our birthday girl. How old? Maybe I can’t tell. But let’s just say that guests flew in from around the country to mark this festive occasion.

Carolyn grew all the…

Carolyn grew all the flowers for this bouquet and another one just as gorgeous. I asked her how many rose bushes it took to have so many perfect roses on hand and she said oh, acres of them.

The party guests are…

The party guests are as follows, from left to right, in respect to their relationship to Angela (the future mother of my grandchildren):

1. Shirley, Angela’s mother’s father’s wife
2. Alice, Cathi’s friend
3. Rosemary, Cathi’s friend
4. Aunt Carolyn, the wife of Uncle Loco Richard
5. Ann, Karen’s Mom
6. Melisa, Cathi’s daughter

9. Aunt Cathi, the Birthday Girl
10. Holly, Anne’s son’s wife
11. Liz, the Mom
12. Aunt Anne
13. Aunt Mary
14. Great Aunt Jean, the sister of the mother of all the sisters
15. Teresa, Cathi’s friend

Angela and I are taking the pictures.

From an email I…

From an email I wrote:

‘A new Mom story – it’s bad but as it turned out not That bad and actually, some part of it is good. She fell twice last week and a time or two in the weeks proceeding so it was obviously time for The Walker. Mom was disconsolate. She pictured herself clumping along with some silver bars that would call out to all around ‘Watch out, here comes a weak old lady’. She was Miserable of what people would think. Windy dragged her to the walker store anyway and Mom was pouting like a little girl who didn’t get to wear her party dress to school.

But it isn’t your gra’ma’s walker anymore! She ended up with some Jaguar of walkers, all matte black, sleek looking with amazing wheels, brakes, and a seat and a basket. Now she parades around with the basket piled high, all smiley face and nodding and waving to strangers, just like always, and when she feels like sitting, she just sits – no matter where, she Is the queen and so she can just sit as she pleases. The positive side is that now she walks with so much more confidence and independence. Love those silver linings!’

The Sisters. …

The Sisters.
Auntie NoNo Carolyn-in-law wife of Richard, the oldest of the siblings.
Auntie Cathi, the birthday guest of honor and the middle child.
Liz, Angela’s Mom and the second born.
Auntie Anne, the youngest.
Auntie MooFy Mary, next after Cathi.

From the window at…

From the window at work – the same view that last week was invisible due to smoke from all the nearby wild fires.

A Bon Voyage for…

A Bon Voyage for David as he moves to Ventura. It’s really just up the road. It’s not as though he was moving to M*aine or anything…

I’m almost home, having…

February 26

I’m almost home, having just taken the suitcases out to the garage, run laundry, for the ba-zillionth time got up the mud the cat drug in, etc. Who else do you know who needs four days to unpack?

Not ‘being home’ did not stop me from going to a great pre-Oscar double feature with Marsha at the Promenade, catching a mess of nominations we had missed. Both Being Julia and Hotel Rwanda were much better than I feared so that was good. I do adore the movies.
