Los Angeles Art Show, Mom’s and Angela’s birthday, the whole month Around Town.

I added pictures in…

I added pictures in the zoo chapter from Angela and Katie, in case you looked early on. Now it’s waay better.

I went back to…

January 27

I went back to the LA Art Show today with Sharon (thanks to Katie’s free pass!). There was a big sign, NO Photos, and I had been so holding back, struggling, control-your-self, not to try and sneak some shots.

But then, at the very end of our visit, and this was the last day of the show, I noticed some people were taking pictures with their phones. So before we left I went back to this place to ask all humble and respectful-like, blah blah, and the woman at the desk here said sure, no problem. WHY didn’t I ask sooner? WHY is this my only shot?

The artist is Armando Romero.

Here’s a clip from…

Here’s a clip from the upper right corner. These are the right colors too, and the contrast and feeling is correct. Maybe it wasn’t my actual favorite piece of art there but I surely did want its photo most! You can go back up to the first shot and see them all again. Flying bee pigs. Cute.

My latest great-nephew! …

January 25

My latest great-nephew! From Travis: ‘Here are some pictures of the first couple of days home from the hospital. Jack was born 18.5″ long and 7lbs. on Jan. 22 2008. Es todo bien.’

Hana and I meant…

Hana and I meant to go to Schatzi for lunch as a bon voyage for Hana’s trip to Austria and Germany. But nein! It’s not there any more! So we ate in the new restaurant that is so new they didn’t even have the dining room open yet. We ate on the patio covered in a plastic tent, under a forest of heat lamps.

The we went to the extravaganza that is the Los Angeles Art Show. It’s a very high end show full of art with 5-6-even 7 digit price tags. It was like going to a surprisingly entertaining museum where everything is for sale.

Happy Birthday DEAR Angela,…

Happy Birthday DEAR Angela, Happy Birthday to YOU! And many moooore!! (That’s thirty two and one to grow on btw since everyone agreed explanation was required.)

Today is/would have been…

January 22

Today is/would have been our mother’s 90th birthday and it’s her first birthday not here. She was a birthday FREAK. Really. Oh the energy she would pour into all our birthdays. But as much as that, she loved her own birthday.

She thought so much of her birthday that 7 years ago when her 3rd great-grandchild was born on her birthday she said something to the effect of ‘darn’ and the one time we tried to celebrate their birthdays together Mom pouted the whole time.

And now GUESS WHAT!? Travis and Lainee’s baby, great-grandbaby number 8, was born TODAY On Her Birthday! Welcome to the world, Jack Weston Black!

Two out of 8…

Two out of 8 great-grandchildren born on Great-Grandma’s birthday. What are the odds of that?! (Hey d…what Are the odds of that?)

Happy Birthday Mom! We should have been wearing crowns, or matching outfits, or leis, and singing or skipping rope because what is our mother’s birthday without a public display of foolishness?

This is the King…

January 19

This is the King family in Germany and Betsy’s sister Elaine and her family visiting Germany from where they live in India. What far-flung folk! It’s the first time for the kids from India to experience snow.

The Kings are coming back soon and we are all so delighted! If it works out and I can help them pack up, I’ll go in May to Dusseldorf and then after they’re off I’ll take the train to Prague and Berlin, and then come home. The euro is not a very welcoming currency these days!

I’m still trying to…

January 18

I’m still trying to get photoshop to do an ink and brush painting. Why there are 21,857 different ‘filters’ you can buy and none of them will do such an effect I do not know. Maybe I should search Again.

Look-y look-y – it’s…

January 17

Look-y look-y – it’s Nancy’s new Grandbaby! Welcome baby Henry!! Mazel Tov Nancy, and Josh and Kelly and big brother Charlie too.

He’s our first in the next flight of new babies. We’ve got at least three more on the way including Rome‘s baby sibling. Are we too lucky or what.

From Nancy: ‘Henry was born on Jan. 15, 8lbs 8oz, a head of dark hair and long white fingers and pink toes.’

From a foggy morning…

January 16

From a foggy morning walk at the beach. Hard to imagine ever tiring of a nice walk at the beach (assuming it’s not sweat-in-your-eyes head-pounding lung-cookingly hot of course). And just because you might sometimes want to walk in the mountains doesn’t mean you’re tired of the beach!

It was my neighbor…

January 14

It was my neighbor Margaret’s 86th birthday today and I made her a little card of some of the pictures I’ve taken of her over the years.

She is still in the rehab-nursing home using a walker to get around but was so excited about her birthday she perked up like I haven’t seen her in a year. During our visit she assured me she was going to Make them let her go home now. She can’t wait to get to her beloved 1960s VW bug and drive out to see her cousins in South Pasadena.

An ex-tenant of L&H…

An ex-tenant of L&H left these stylin’ desks and they totally fit into the new outside office Darryl is putting together. It’s so cool when the magic works.

We ate in the…

We ate in the oyster bar, a really wonderful place surrounded by giant fish tanks. Most of the tanks have fish but the one in the corner has EELs, eels with mouthfulls of Teeth. They are not on the menu.

Out for a walk…

January 10

Out for a walk on the boardwalk with Sharon and Brigitte, actually at this moment enjoying lunch, we find this scary view. Go home little girl!

Remember when I was…

January 9

Remember when I was in South Carolina and stayed at Kath and Steve’s amazing Aolean Hill Farm. You’re gonna want to click on that link. It’s a wowzer.

They’ve stopped by here on their way to many months in Thailand and I’m SO glad Ann thought to invite me to lunch, a chance to visit, and a chance to say Bon Voyage!

We’re out for our…

January 8

We’re out for our afternoon walk. We are like The Count. We looove to Count, especially steps. These days we count steps in Spanish – uno-dos-tres…

What’s next what’s next…

What’s next what’s next what’s next? Let’s go let’s go let’s go!

And who is that other little girl? The one with Big Bird in her arm? Why, that would be Rome’s Aunt Cynthia(!) about 3 months younger than Rome is now. Oh, the adorableness…I can hardly breathe.

Some neighbors with their…

Some neighbors with their holiday decorations still available for admiring. ‘Snowflake!’ Rome exclaims every single time we pass by. ‘Snowflake!’ They also have a Santa hanging from the eaves.

Wow, we celebrated Ken’s…

January 7

Wow, we celebrated Ken’s actual birthday on his actual birthday. Recently we’ve been running months behind so this was a real treat. And we went to Lawry’s with Ken’s Coupons so we didn’t have to take out a second mortgage.

The kids went out…

January 6

The kids went out for their anniversary date-night and Rome and I got to play around, xo making his way into the action too.

I’ve been out to…

I’ve been out to dinner, visited at friend’s homes, done some work for my sister, the odds and ends of life but photo-wise for the last many days, I guess it’s All Rome All The Time.

The building next door…

January 4

The building next door is completely built and now they just have the interiors and the landscaping to finish. It’s not Too bad. It could be so much worse. Half-full and all that.

This is the view from my window. It’s most dominating in the back yard because the construction widens out to the property line and you can feel it towering over the picnic table. But it could be worse is all I can say.

.Happy New Year!First I…

December 31.

Happy New Year!

First I went to Maryanne’s where a few of the Monday Nighters gathered since Marsha and Tom were not up to doing the party they have been doing for the last 25 years. When you skip a year do you lose your vesting? We had fun anyway!

Then I stopped by at Ken’s soiree where games were Under Way and urgings of victory issued.
