And while we’re at…
And while we’re at it, here’s Bill and Cheryl and their god-grandgirl. Sweet and pink and a real American Girl Doll.

Another view of Levitated Mass…coming along. In a couple of months or so we’ll get to stand under that baby. Way cool.
I had a chance to visit with Brigitte today for a few hours before she and Knut are off back to Europe probably not to come LA way again for a while, so I’ll just have to visit them there!
At LACMA we went through the Pacific Standard Time exhibit, as entertaining as ever, and we saw a preview of the new ‘Children of the Plumed Serpent: The Legacy of Quetzalcoatl in Ancient Mexico’ which was a well-curated selection of artifacts from the Nahua-, Mixtec-, and Zapotec era.
Lastly we enjoyed the ‘In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States’ show. It was quite interesting and I was especially glad to see many things I liked a lot from artists I’d never heard of.
March 28
Bill noticed that I had a sad face on my calendar for the last time we went out. He was utterly totally 100% innocent of the sad face. It was me all by myself who ate two baskets of chips…and at Cirque du Soleil, an entire (YUM!) large package of (oooow) caramel corn…
So tonight when we went out for dinner we Walked 1.5 miles there and 1.5 miles back, and shared modestly, and had a completely Happy Face Calendar STAR time.
March 27
Rome and Lilly had friends over today – Nora, Lila, and Anya. Hi cuties!
You can, for example, take this picture and then walk downstairs and then turn around and walk back upstairs and in that time these five girls can have every toy and all their 10,000 pieces off every shelf and scattered to the wind.
But not once did any of them get in a twist with another. They just played happily. Worth the mess! say I who just pushed it all into a big pile and left it for Angela to sort out.
March 25
At LACMA today with Sharon, Nancy, and Nancy’s friend Brenda, we watched 2 hours of the 24 hour extravaganza by Christian Marclay called ‘The Clock’. It was quite splendid. Thanks to Nancy for arranging the outing.
Playing at the Bing Theater from noon on the 24th to noon on the 25th, it’s a montage of movie and tv clips with clocks in them following along exacty with the time of the day/night when you are watching. A clock appears in the scene every minute or so set to the time that it is where you are.
Hmm, that was not a very appealing explanation but it is very clever and fun. What makes it an art project I think is the way he brought drama to the whole thing as individual stories evolve from the clips. Also the sound track overlaying the scenes was fantastic. When LACMA plays it again, as they certainly will, I’ll go back at a different time and watch another 2 hours.

March 24
Windy stopped by this morning and we did my two exercise routines. Or, as Lilly would say, ‘Granny, let’s do eX-er-sigh-ses’.
I can see this paper from every seat in my house and when I look at it I am inspired to do my food journal and do my exercises because I want a *star* on my chore chart. When I see the two sad faces I’m not sad, I’m pleased that I didn’t give up!
Then I went with Anya to see the movie Jiro Dreams of Sushi about this Japanese National Treasure and Three Star Michelin chef who’s been serving sushi at a 10 seat counter in a Tokyo train station for 75 years. It was a documentary and it was delightful. Anyone with any affection for sushi will looove this movie.
Then we went out to eat sushi!

On March 15th, barely one week ago, Gary had a complete knee replacement and just look at him now, toddling around the house taking care of himself. Gary! you go!!
Liz and Dev too, thanks for the YUMmy dinner and champagne to toast Gary’s good health.
March 22
Livin’ in the land of Show Biz. We need this work; it’s good for our town. In the parking lot behind where I’m standing there must have been 50 trucks loaded with gear, craft services, talent trailers, portable generators, and on and on.
They couldn’t have scheduled that this very morning would be foggy so I’m curious how they handled what must be a change in the plan, where now you can’t begin to see the sun or the sea. But no worries, that’s why they call it magic.
March 21
Oh NOOoooo.
There is a 25% chance that if I leave my house Mon-Fri any time between 4pm and 7pm it will take me an hour or More to get onto the 405, some less to pass by, 2 1/2 miles away…like what happened TODAY. There is another 25% chance that it will take 45 minutes, and half the time I can make the journey in a half hour.
It’s madness I tell you. Every east-bound street is in gridlock with cars nose to tail and drivers on the verge. There is still construction at the on-ramps so I’m just hope hope hoping that we’ll be feeling some relief soon.

March 19
Blimey, another massive festivity compliments of Maxine. YUM! Gifts! eating! drinking! making merry! and then a delightful premiere for season 14 of Dancing With The Stars enjoyed with buckets of fresh hot popcorn.
Erin go bragh! Maxine go bragh!
March 17
Brigitte and Knut are back in town for a couple of weeks to finish up the formalities with the IRS, US Immigration, Portuguese Customs, doctors appointments, and etc. so Ingalill and Tony had a neighborhood party…Party Hearty!
The guy who bought Brigitte and Knut’s house asked me if I lived on the street and I said yeah, whenever there’s a party.
Inga-Lill Gaimari, Knut, Stephen Cope, Tony Gaimari, Ernie Kwok new owner, Adolfo Argueta, Sharon, Rana Alshihabi, Miriam Argueta, Brigitte
March 16
Since I didn’t have to go to jury duty and hadn’t made any other plans and since it was raining I just sat around all day listening to the radio, messing about with my new photoshop, and snacking hourly for a yummy 2,000 calories. What a great day.
(Just practicing…)
March 14
Me and Bill and Ken, out for dinner at the end of the pier followed by a stroll down to the parking lot and the Big Top to enjoy…
All the Cirques make you gasp, and then make you want to see if you can jump even one little foot into the air.
March 13
Soccer! Six and seven year old girls playing soccer. Gotta love it. Rome’s back there behind the coach giving that ball a good kick.
…and here she is! In LACMA’s back yard, waiting for her final positioning and grand opening coming-soon.
I have developed a deep affection for all the ‘but is it art’ on offer these days especially when it involves a spectacle. I am excited to stand under that ledge of Levitated Mass and see what it’s like.
After this quick view of Levitated Mass I and the cousins went into Hollywood. First we ate, and long-time Angelinos can guess where this is, yes, at Miceli’s.
Then we went to Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions on Hollywood Blvd near Highland where I had never been before and where it was oh so contemporary.
I liked it.
March 10
We’re celebrating Lona’s birthday today with a very long list of too much fun. First we spent more than an hour perusing Liz’s Antique Hardware on La Brea.
Next stop Pepperdine U, and at Pepperdine, first stop, LUNCH in their gorgeous cafeteria. I was standing in the pay line with a tray while Lona and Windy finished collecting our food. Across from me at the cash register was this lovely woman who said “may I please buy your lunch for you. I have tons of food points that I need to use.”
Oh no no was my first reaction. My second reaction was YES, how fun, you’ll treat my sister to lunch for her birthday. .she’ll LOVE it. And indeed she did. They chatted away and we learned a bit of her story. Sweet college kids being kind to old ladies – COOL!
What Pepperdine looks like from the Internet. 18k of your 68k tuition goes for the view.
(internet pix)
So we did all the requirements – see the chapel, enjoy the Weisman, eat at the cafeteria (good food, sunny patio, aMAzing view), and walk the track.
And then we went back to Venice Circle for The Massage. Oh yeah, Happy Birthday to YOU!
March 9
Welcome to the Los Angeles River walk #25, the Whittier Narrows Dam, part of the Rio Hondo tributary. These metal-worked gates are so cool.
Click here for MORE Los Angeles River and cool gates.
There’s a large park here, the Grant Rea Memorial Park with ball fields, picnic spots, and a little zoo of domesticated animals, fun for the children.
On this part of the river they have not yet broken up the concrete bottom, but on another front they are controlling the graffiti.
Hi Sharon. No shade here, still some small birds would swoop down for a bath.
The little ones migrate to each other without regard to gender but once older, the girls gather on one end of the long bench and the boys are waay over there at the other end.
Except all the girls were attentive..focused even..on waiting for Freddy, and sad and concerned when he didn’t show up. I’m looking forward to meeting Freddy one day..
Speaking of which, our travelers Maryanne, Alicia, and Becky returned from their trip to Cambodia and Vietnam bearing Gifts.
Look at us, each kimono individually selected, each scarf in a matching hue. Thank you ladies!
Becky took this picture with a tripod. Becky, Maxine, Marija, Ann, Lourdes, Ljubica, Alicia, Marsha, Maryanne, me.
March 5
Marija took me to lunch today at our favorite Valley Girl spot, the Golden Hunan.
When I left Northridge in 1998 the first Korean family had just moved in across the street. Now look at this. Golden Hunan has a Chinese sign but the Tae Kwan Do, Hair Focus, Morning Glory, and the United West Mortgage signs are all in Korean.
Then I went over to D&A’s to load up some software on my (yesss) new computer, and to admire my FABulous grandgirls.
March 4
Helping Muriel move into her new studio. It’s so exciting to await the work that will emerge from this bright and welcoming space.
March 3, evening
Yikes…from Junior High…Yikes! Thanks to Gayle for making this happen – some of these folks I haven’t seen in More Than Fifty Years.
Bruce Benjamin, Robin Steinberg (Arnie Steinberg’s wife), Peter Rashkin, Laurie Greenstadt, Art Angel, Cathy Rauch Insert: Gayle Peitzer Hilbert, David Meyer, Lew Leader, Andy Gach, Carl Lieberman, Andrea Graham
Top: Camille Carter (Peter’s partner), Mickie Peitzer (my mom), Bonnie Pastor (Ben’s wife), Rita Leader (Lew’s mom), Rosalie Wayne, Sandy Leader (Lew’s wife) Bottom: Michael Hittleman, Gina Blumenfeld, Ben Pomerantz, Art Angel, Laurie Greenstadt.
March 3
The cousins and I went to LA Louver to see a fantastic Kienholz exhibit “Kienholz Before LACMA”, closing today. (I don’t know who did this piece. It was on the upstairs outside balcony.)
Nancy, Sharon
I was NUTS for this one. CRAZY I tell you. See the deer head upside down and the arrow pointing ‘up’. What WHAT…that’s just so wrong.
I came back to look at it 20 times. I’m so agitated! And so delighted! And so thrilled that a silly thing like this can make me so agitated and delighted all at the same time.
Then we walked on the boardwalk from Venice Blvd to Washington Blvd and then to lunch, YUM.
March 2
Hartley got these plants around Valentine’s Day, one for me and one for Windy. That was very sweet, and this is what it looks like today – perfect.
These guys often perform outside the stopping point for The Long Walk and they are so good and I like every single song they play. I give them money and that’s saying a lot.
March 1
Check it out! A couple of weeks ago these vines were all spread out on the grass for the painters and here they are today, back in place and blooming as if to say Thank You for the pretty, clean house.
February 28
Out for our walk we passed a gardner who was trimming a bougainvillea plant and he cleaned the thorns off these branches for the girls. Thank you Mr Gardner, we enjoyed them!
February 27
A lot of this and that lately but not much really, except for home sweet home.
27-I did some bits for my older sister for her business and then punked out on Monday Night in the Valley because of the rain that never really came.
26-an Oscar Night fete (thanks to Sharon and Nancy) and Sharon loaned me a novel by PD James ‘Death Comes to Pemberley’ which is so far great fun to read.
25-Housekeeping, trip planning, and a most un-entertaining list of chores. .and watching, consecutively, one after the other, all the episodes in the first two seasons of Breaking Bad…
February 24
Marsha had a ‘Tupperware Party’ tonight only they were selling Party Lite candles instead of Tupperware. Whatever happened to Tupperware parties anyway? The get-together was very fun, and tasty too, too tasty if my calorie counter is to be believed.
I snagged these pictures off Kelly’s facebook. Marsha and Tom, and Jordan. Oh Jordan, you are too cute.
kvv.
February 23
Tomorrow is Cynthia’s birthday (Happy HAPPY Birthday sweetie) and here is a picture Mike took last week of Kieran, on the far left, having just earned his green sash in Kung Fu. You go Kieran! and you go Cynthia and Mike!
mh.
I did this in black and white because all the pictures we were looking at were in black and white.
The yearbook looked mostly just like this except there were no trees. A university or a business park? I think it’s going to stand up better than we thought it might at the beginning.
February 22
Susie and I took today to visit UC Irvine, the site of Susie’s freshman and sophomore years in college during 1965-1967, the first two years of the school’s existence.
The inset shows how this site looked back then.
We had no expectations of what to see and what to do but by a series of happy circumstances we ended up at the research library where we were the only people plus the three librarians who wanted nothing more than to make us welcome.
They had old pictures from the beginning and the very first yearbook, when Susie was a freshman … in 1965. YES! There she is! What a treat.
Susie was there when the student body elected the anteater as their mascot, a bold and subversive move at the time.
Here’s Susie enjoying one of the many interactive installations at the on-campus Beall Center for Art and Technology.
February 21
A couple of shots from today’s walk.
Rome and Lilly’s favorite treat used to be a stop-off at Spoonit, their neighborhood yogurt place which went out of business recently and now the venue is going to open as a full-service cafe.
This is the mural on the outside wall.
February 20
YAY I get to stop thinking about the laundry set-up for awhile.
I had the new used craigslist dryer delivered today (the old one died) and the guy said keeping the machines like this was absolutely a-ok. He said washers and dryers are built like cars – leave ’em out, no problem.
February 19
Sharon and my turn-around point when we do The Big Walk. Walk for an hour, eat for an hour, walk for an hour back. Good and good for you!
Then I went over to D&A’s for a chance to say Happy Birthday to Gary. Here we have candles in the shape of a 6 and a 7. Lovin’ the smoke from alll those candles.
We talked about our choices for Medicare plans and Gary’s upcoming knee replacement surgery. Then we thanked our lucky stars for good health…and Medicare.
February 17
Even icanhascheezburger is in the game so today I have spent the day watching all the episodes in the first season of Downton Abbey. I’m moving on to season two right now.
It’s been an entertaining day not having watched much of it up until now I am happy to keep watching. What’s going to happen?!
February 16
What I’ve been doing the last couple of days (more like the last six weeks…)…going to restaurants, and trying to eat less. Less is not more. Less is not enough.
(internet pix)
February 14
My little valentine tableau for the grandgirls. Rome picked first. She chose the one with the Love Heart, and Lilly was totally happy with the other one, so yay.
This was Rome’s computer when she was Lilly’s age and here it is, still living strong after almost daily use for more than three years. Wow, that toy gets a solid 5 star review.
Rome made me this valentine at school and it is SO adorable. Rome and Angela brought me flowers too which was SO sweet.
D&A went out for a date so Rome made us a schedule for the evening: 1) Calre 2) Play 3) TV 4) Dinr 5) Cards 6) Favrit Part ov the Day 7) Good Nit.
#6, Favorite Part of the Day is when, after dinner-bath-play-snack-teeth-story and just before Good Night everyone tells about their favorite part of the day. It’s a lovely way to lead into Sweet Dreams.
February 12
I poured directly and entirely on to the keyboard of my running computer a totally full cup of sticky steamy hot Indian tea With milk And sugar, and within three seconds I heard the sizzle and pop of the computer’s death rattle.
The fix-it guys kept the computer for 2+ weeks before stating it would cost $2000 to fix.
I’m into the fourth week of using my ancient ThinkPad x30 unearthed from the garage, still doing everything that needs to get done, but the screen is quite small with not-so-great resolution and it has dimmed over time…and it operates Ohhhh Soooo Sloooowly.
So I’m having to buy a new computer which means shopping which means I am very bad at it.
I should add that the hard drive is completely fine so recovery should be relatively straight-forward. Lucky you say the fix-it guys, the drive had its own isolated case.

February 10
I’m making a new chapter for all these Santa Barbara pictures but here are the highlights.
Nancy and Michi on our walk in the Botanic Garden. What a gorgeous day.
February 11
Click here for more Santa Barbara pictures from this trip and with a few pictures from many previous visits.
On the way from Santa Ynez back to Santa Barbara I swung through Solvang, the same as ever, Shop ‘Till You Drop.
Next stop, Ojai.
I arrived around sunset and headed right up to Meditation Mount. What they say: “Our Mission is to promote the building of an enlightened and compassionate world through the power of creative meditation, inspirational educational programs, and community-based events focused on the practical application of the following universal spiritual principles.”
It’s a wonderful setting and speaks to the whole sense of Ojai and perhaps what it is that Beatrice Wood found so inspiring.
Back in town now to go with Michi to the harbor to watch her ukulele group play. It was fun, and an inspiration!
Michi is always trying to get folks to say ukulele as you would in Hawaiian…oo-(as in moose)-coo-leh-leh. She’s about as successful as I am pronouncing karaoke as you would in Japanese…kah-rah-oh-ke. It’s just not going to take with the folks. How karaoke turned into care-ree-oh-key looks to me like a nice topic for a term paper.
…Ojai.

Los Olivos, yikes, it’s turned into a ‘town’ of a thousand wine tasting establishments.
…at a very cool guest house in the foothills of the Santa Ynez Valley where I failed to catch any pictures of the many extremely colorful and extremely entertaining residents and guests.
Santa Ynez is predominately a wine making area (think Sideways). It got so cold and so windy that by sunset I was already snug in my room at the guest house and didn’t emerge until morning.
February 9
Angela was doing chores all day today so after Lilly’s nap Lilly and I walked over to Rome’s school to meet up at the Wednesday Fruit Stand where a few moms sell fruit donated by Whole Foods.
It’s a nice fund raiser, sets a good example for the children, and they like it…not as much as they like the Tuesday-Thursday pizza…but I saw plenty of cheerful kids buy fruit and not moan for pizza.
Jen, Stephanie, Angela
Angela had such a busy day today, all day and into the night, so I thought to take the kids out for dinner. Mel’s! Everyone Loves Mel’s!
February 7
I want to remember to look for those Japanese style rain spouts. (I just looked them up – they are called rain chains and easily acquired.)
February 5
Thanks Carl! for your generous hospitality, delicious food, and honkin’ 64″ Superbowl worthy mega-TV. And many thanks Bob for the afternoon walk and post game concert. Tooo fun.
Carl, (CPA) Bob, (Bobby Z) Bob
February 4
Wow, I haven’t been to the Shrine Auditorium in decades. I went with Sharon to see…
…whooo. Mahler’s 8th, with 800+ singers and 200+ instrumentalists as the largest extravaganza in The Mahler Project where within a few short weeks, in honor of the 100th anniversary of Mahler’s death, our Dudamel will have conducted all of Mahler’s symphonies.
I didn’t get a picture of (sigh…) our Dudamel (sigh…) but you can find plenty on the internet, adorable as he is.
(And you can find Marsha in the top row about 12 or so in from the left, adorable as she is.)
The music was a gasper and the venue was very cool, worth a look, but mostly what the Shrine reminded me of was how aMazing the acoustics are at Disney Hall.
February 3
I saved this picture Angela took in January for a time when I was thin on photos. Awwwww.
ak.
This is the view from Merlyn’s window at Saint Johns hospital were he’s spending the night after a bit of cutting and pasting. All is well.
January 29
Marija had an out-of-town relative drop by unexpectedly Monday night. He’s a second cousin whose family left Croatia 40-50 years ago to live in Argentina. They haven’t seen each other in 47 years!
Here’s what Marija wrote: “His name is Lobel. His mother and I are first cousins-two sister’s children. Lobel, is my second cousin. His mother/ Danica, passed away a few years ago 🙁 It was his mother’s 83rd birthday last Monday. His mother left Croatia when I was a little girl. Her father lived in Argentina, and she came to live with him. She met Croatian man and had 2 sons with him. Lobel and his brother were born in Argentina and for the first and only time I saw them in Croatia when they were little boys. Lobel, 6 years old at the time and younger brother. His business partner’s name is Martin.”
January 28
In the morning I went with Steve and Celina to the Farmer’s Market which was fun, to wander the aisles with a Professional chef (you go Celina).
Then I went with Ken to the matinee of the Cirque du Soleil Michael Jackson show at the Staples Center. It was a huge show in a huge venue with some serious highlights and some times that really lagged.
Views from the lounge at the Ritz Carlton! That’s the Hollywood sign in the upper left.
These are all phone photos btw, since no cameras are allowed at the concert.
Another one. We came back here after the show for a beer, then strolled around LA Live looking for a place to eat that was not the R$tz Carlton but not as noisy as an airport landing strip. Unavailable.
We ended up eating at The Tavern next door to The Pantry and enjoyed it very much, followed by a walk to The Standard hotel a few blocks away.
The roof lounge at The Standard. Whooo. There’s a lot more to it than what you see here. This place was totally hipster cool (maybe not, maybe it just seemed that way to me…). And although there was no one who looked even remotly like us I loved it and didn’t feel the least unwelcome.
January 27
Big day with the kids today while D&A were out. Our most exciting adventure was a long and lively walk to the Galleria where we admired the fountains, hopped along on the colored tiles, and ate ice cream.
Then we made our way back stopping often for various entertainments. Rocks, sticks, leaves, no dogs this time which is very odd, running up and down ramps and lawn hills, putting things in Granny’s pockets like she was a kangaroo…
