February 27

I had dinner with Bill tonight and then he took me over to see the new, very white, very bright Crystal offices, they having left Century City for smaller digs in a smaller complex at Wilshire Blvd. and the 405.

And this is not…

And this is not like the old days either.

Goodness. They have two floors almost entirely encased in glass. The window offices and the inside offices, all of them, have glass walls facing into the cube-space with no option for privacy and the cubes are waist high with partitions topped off with a foot or so of glass. Those blinds you see are on street-facing windows.

This move was predicated upon a lot of telecommuting among the staff. Every department has seats enough for maybe 50-75% of their people. Some folks are home permanently but mostly it’s some days home and some days in the office. Let’s watch what happens next!

…fun with Lights!

The kids have a night light that shines, in various colors, stars and a moon onto the ceiling. What fun!

I think these are…

February 24

I think these are called Coast Live Oak. When the oak trees in California are smaller they could be Live Oak or Scrub Oak and I’m not sure how to tell the difference.

But when they get big: Coast Live Oak.

Sharon and I were having a nice walk through Solstice Canyon and we were thinking about our upcoming trip to Kauai and maybe for a fun project we would do some bird watching and I’d try to get some shots of the wonderful variety of birds…

…but if this has…

…but if this has anything to say it’s going to take mostly LUCK. Here’s the best I could do on this guy.

Here are three pictures from Mike and Cynthia in Saint Paul.

It was Mike’s birthday and the shirt I sent him was too small. I offered it to Kieran and he thought it would be cool to have a shirt like his dad’s. How cute is this.

It has melted some…

It has melted some since these pictures earlier in February. Yikes.

Cynthia just wrote to report that they got 7 inches last night and whatever melted is back Plus More!

Mike’s mom Phyllis and…

Mike’s mom Phyllis and her boyfriend of a few years, Ken, got MARRIED. They popped down to the courthouse in their small Minnesota town and did the deed. Awww.

February 10

Mel, Cheryl’s dad and Bill’s part-time landlord, ninety-something and on his own up to the very end. Charming and funny, loving and kind, a Navy man from The Greatest Generation. What a guy.

Here’s Bill and Cheryl…

Here’s Bill and Cheryl and their girls Mindy and Kim, Mindy of my Peace Corps stay in Zambia and Kim of my wedding trip to Fort Myers.

February 9

I went with the cousins Nancy and Sharon and Nancy’s friend Michele to see the animated and live action Oscar nominated shorts. Although we all agreed that the selection might not have been as wonderful as previous years, still we were very glad to have seen them.

Animated: Feral (wolfboy); Get a Horse! (Disney); Mr. Hublot (steam punk); Possessions (haiku); Room on the Broom (storybook)

Live Action: Aquel No Era Yo-That Wasn’t Me (child soldier); Avant Que De Tout Perdre-Just Before Losing Everything (escape from home); Helium (tear jerker); Pitääkö Mun Kaikki Hoitaa?-Do I Have to Take Care of Everything? (late to the wedding); The Voorman Problem (trading places)

February 8

That’s my across the street neighbor Kathleen second from the right and her friends Julie, Caroline, and Beth. All these ladies, myself included of course, happily carry our Medicare cards. Really?! But we look so young! Yes.

We went to one of the excellent talks presented by the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City. It was totally entertaining and what made it entertaining and Great was that it started at 6:30, over at 8, jammied up by 9, just the way I like it in these my Medicare years.

Pretty Toes at the (one of 10,000) Vietnamese Nail Salon.

If you haven’t visited Vietnam in recent years you will be glad if you do. You’ll not experience your mani-pedi the same again. For a travelogue you can click here for the book of ASIA and then click around in the middle column for the various ‘chapters’.

February 5

I don’t have any pictures of the girls this week. This thing is rolling around in the internet and every time I see it, sigh, I have to hang my head in recognition.

Out the window of Bubba Gumps on the pier with Ken and Bill enjoying a pre-show dinner and amazing at the view.

Totally looks fake, but no.

Cirque du Soleil: Totem!

If you like the Cirques you’ll probably like this one, here under the big top situated in the Santa Monica Pier parking lot. It’s modest compared to the Vegas Extravaganzas but there are a few unforgettable acts and it’s fun to be so intimate with the stage.

We got off fairly early for the Griffith Observatory where we planned to take some pictures. You’ll notice the out-in-the-country feeling in other photos. From this view it’s all LA.

You can click here for a longer story with a larger collection of photos and some history of the: Griffith Observatory.
